Rapper/producer Wyclef Jean confirms that he will run for president of Haiti.
From day one of Wyclef’s fame rapping alongside former group members Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill of the super Hip-Hop trio the Fugees, Wyclef has always remembered to keep Haiti at the forefront of it all.
Often times seen with the country’s flag wrapped around his head or hanging out of his pocket, Wyclef always made sure he represented Haiti to the fullest. Now, he is ready to lead the country that he has so much love for.
According to Time.com, Wyclef has confirmed that he will announce his candidacy for the President of Haiti this Thursday – which is reportedly 2 days before the deadline for candidacy.
The current president has reached his term limit and an election for a new President is set for November 28. According to sources, Wyclef has a good chance of winning the election because of his status here in the U.S. and the people he affiliates himself with.
When asked about his decision to throw his hat in the race to become President of Haiti, Wyclef said, “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.”
Rumors suggested last month, that Wyclef had already decided to run for President. The Haitian born, Brooklyn, NY raised MC had promptly filled out the necessary paper work if he had decided to run for President.
Wyclef was practically the first celebrity to roll up his sleeves when the news of the earthquake destructing Haiti was released. His foundation Yele Haiti has helped aid the people of Haiti as well as raise awareness for the fallen country well before the earthquake struck in January of this year.
According to the NY Daily News, Wyclef will need to prove that he resided in Haiti for 5 consecutive years and will have to prove that he is not a citizen of another country. Wyclef is currently not a citizen of the U.S.; he is just listed as a “resident.”
Wyclef Jean will announce his decision on Thursday at 9pm on CNN’s Larry King Live.
