If you watch WRAL in the morning you’ve heard their tagline: Wake Up With Friends. That’s exactly how I felt I went to interview Kelcey Carlson for my Working Moms series.
I had emailed Kelcey to see if she would participate in my series and heard back right away with a gracious acceptance. When I got to the studios, I was greeted with a warm smile and her desire to make me feel comfortable.
Kelcey is originally from Indiana but has been with WRAL since 2003 when she started as a reporter. She started doing the morning shows in January of 2009 when Lynda Loveland went to WRAL-FM to do the morning show on the radio. Lucky for Kelcey, her husband Dave is on a similar schedule as her since he does the morning show on 93.9 FM. It sure does make for early mornings though. They are up by 2:30 to get in to work by 4:00 a.m.
Kelcey and Dave met while they were both working in Michigan married in 2001. He calls her his best friend which is exactly how a marriage should be. Kelcey had a baby boy in January of 2007, his name is Charlie. While she is at work she has a trusted sitter that he stays with. She must be an early bird too.
While I was talking to Kelcey about various topics, there was no single light in her eyes that went off as brightly as when she talks about Charlie. She has truly enjoyed being a Mommy and takes her responsibility to heart.
Charlie’s biggest enjoyment is trains. He loves train sets, train videos and of course Thomas the Tank Engine. Kelcey has taken Charlie to the Amtrak station so that he can see the trains pull in and has even taken him to Charlotte on the Amtrak just so he could ride a train.
His second love is baseball and even has a little batting set he plays with in the yard. Kelcey says that there are days he wants to go out and hit with his bat and sometimes she and her husband are too tired to think about baseball. But, they go out, sit on the grass and pitch pine cones to him so that he can play.
She has enjoyed seeing the world through a child’s eye and how little things fascinate them. Their pure enjoyment at doing what adults would consider boring is something that Kelcey really enjoys taking part in. She says that Charlie has helped her to have more fun and be a more fun person.
Family is very important to Kelcey so they do end up traveling back to Michigan where her husband is from to see family as well as Indiana to see hers. She does have family members close by too which makes living her in Raleigh easier for her. She loves not having lake effect snow and yet we still have seasons.
I did ask her some routine questions about her life and current events. For example, she likes Sam Adams Cherry Wheat ice cold on a hot summer day. It reminds her of the summer before starting her first job and all the memories she has. In the cooler months she enjoys wine. She is fond of non-fiction books so don’t expect her to be Team Jacob or Team Edward. She also doesn’t have a preference for Star Wars or Star Trek. Sorry guys. There are some TV shows she likes but doesn’t watch much.
As for what she does to decompress and what she enjoys as a hobby; it’s running. She enjoys running in marathons and tries to run two marathons a year. She has a treadmill she runs on when she can’t run outside and also has a group of people she runs with for enjoyment. She used to be involved in “Girls on the Run” in Michigan as well. It was an organization that had girls in third through fifth grade meet up and talk girl talk for several weeks. They would also train so that at the end of the program they would run a 5k. Kelcey speaks fondly of the time she was involved in it.
So the next time you see Kelcey Carlson on the television and she seems to be smiling at you; she probably is. She seems to have a true love of life, people and Mommyhood though not necessarily in that order. And maybe one day I will get to report that Charlie is a big brother too but it hasn’t happened; yet!
