You may already be in a career and feel completely unfulfilled, or you may be out of work. You have an idea on what your ‘Dream Job’ is, but you don’t know quite how to make the transition. What’s Next? Follow Your Passion and Find Your Dream Job is written by Kerry Hannon.
This book, while a quick read, has some inspiring stories and tips for anyone who wants to start their second career, but may not know how. Mainly it is is focused on those folks who already know what their passion is and want more meaning in their personal and professional lives.
Some of the tips for embarking on your dream job focus on how to find a mentor. This can be a make or break step in setting up your own business. Without utilizing someone elses knowledge and expertise, you could be taking the long way around instead of eliminating the newbie mistakes. The book also goes on to say be open when asking for advice. Keep learning and networking.
For those individuals looking to setup a non profit organization, there are some fundraising ideas, how to sell yourself and your organization better as well as recommended courses you can take.
Additionally, each chapter has a great story of someone who has already made the transition from working for a company to working for themselves. It explores what their motivation was, how they made the transition, what they would do differently, and advice for those looking to start their ‘second act.’
There are also some practical websites to visit to help you explore self employment. One that I found extremely interesting was VocationVocations (www.vocationvacations.com). You spend a few days in your ‘dream job’ and try it on for size with leaders in that particular field picking their brains so to speak and really see if that ‘dream job’ is really you.
Overall, I found this book enjoyable. If you don’t know what your passion in life is, then this book won’t help you find it. This book is designed for people who already know what their dream is. If you are having a difficult time finding your dream, look at these other articles to help you start the journey.
Whether you are searching for your passion or know what it is already, the tips outlined in this book are certainly applicable in the Houston job market. As always, have a great time marketing Brand You!
