Jesus tells us that we are to be the salt of the earth. What is salt? Salt is a preservative. What’s a preservative? A preservative keeps things from decaying. God must have such a tremendous amount of confidence in us to entrust us with such an important job. We as Christians need to show others the right way. We should try to lead them in the right direction to try to get them away from the garbage and decay that’s in the worldly society.
The direction is the way of the cross. Because we realize that being on the right road is the best direction we can ever give and others can ever accept. With all the corrupt circumstances going on in the world today, it’s very easy for people to decay. In Matthew 5:13, we can read about us being the, “Salt of the earth.” It’s also written in there that the salt shall not lose its saltiness. When that happens, it will lose its flavor. How can salt lose its saltiness? By being diluted, in dirt, for example.
You may be saying, “How does that fit in with me?” Well, everywhere in the world is dirt, such as drugs, illicit sex, lies, theft, murder, anxiety and so much more. We have to keep ourselves clean. That’s hard to do, at times, because we are out there in all that dirt and mire of the world. We have to be so very careful because if we aren’t strong enough and rooted and grounded in our beliefs, we will fail. If we do, we lose our saltiness; we lose our flavor. Then who would want to follow our directions? Why would anyone want to taste something that had salt if it was dirty? Yuck!!!!!
I am going to give each one of you a challenge, including myself. Let’s get out into the world and give it a good flavor. Just maybe we can bring someone who’s been decaying to the point of wanting to taste what we have to see that it is good. In Psalm 34:8 we can read, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” Now go out and see what you can do!!!
