Excitement is in the air, school is right around the corner. Those getting ready for Kindergarten can feel more stress than others, however, as everything they’re about to experience is all new. Parents can help their Kindergartners get ready for school by doing the following things.
Orientation is a less-stressful way for Kindergarteners to begin to get a feel for their school surroundings. With a parent close by, meeting the teachers and even fellow students can become an adventure.
Shop for school supplies
Kindergarteners have school supply requirements, too. Parents can bring along their Kindergartener to help with school supply purchases to be part of the decision-making process. School websites have supply lists, or highlight the basic list and print from here.
Children benefit from knowing that someone else has been in their shoes. Reading stories about others going to Kindergarten can help change a natural fearfulness of the unknown into anticipation.

Practice a dry run
Everyone feels better when they know what to expect, and Kindergarteners are no exception.
Parents can practice a trip to school with their child, on a weekend or an evening before school begins. Just by standing next to a school bus with their child, parents can help make the big, noisy machines less terrifying.
If a child will be walking to school, parents should make sure that their child is accompanied by a responsible sibling, schoolmate, or adult, and that the path to school is familiar and any dangerous areas addressed.
Basic safety should be discussed in an appropriate tone and manner, whether a Kindergartener will be traveling on foot or on a school bus, and all children should learn the “10-foot Rule” for school bus safety.
Parents should also make sure that their child is properly registered, which can be done at any of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS).
More information on programs and Kindergarten readiness is available at the VBCPS Kindergarten link, and information for 2011 – 2012 Kindergarten registration and program information will be emailed by signing up at the vbschools x-tra site and selecting “School / Center News”. The 2010 – 2011 bus schedule notices will be emailed by signing up under “Bus Schedules”.
It’s never too early to think about post-high school plans. Parents and grandparents can look for more information at the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan site.
