Ever since Steve Carell announced that he wouldn’t be returning for more hijinks on The Office once his contract wraps at the end of the show’s forthcoming seventh season, speculation has run rampant on who might replace him. We’ve heard everything from “Dwight should take over” to “Bring back Ricky Gervais from the British version” over the past month, but up until now we haven’t had any real idea of who might be taking over the Dunder-Mifflin Scranton branch. Entertainment Weekly has scored quite a scoop, though, narrowing it down to the top two contenders for the role…and they’re absolutely not who you were expecting. Keep on reading for the details, my gentle Examiner readers…
There have been precious few stones unturned in the quest to suggest possible replacements for Steve Carell on NBC’s The Office. We’ve heard that some wanted Pam to take over, while others thought Dwight was right for the job. More than a few unoriginal people (Comedy Examiner included) have suggested that Ricky Gervais could be plugged into Steve Carell’s vacant slot (that sounded dirty, and we apologize), but up until now we’ve had no idea what the writers and producers of the series had in mind. Now we do, and it’s completely unexpected:
Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers of the NBC hitcom have quietly reached out to rising comic-actors Danny McBride (the breakout star of HBO’s hilarious Eastbound & Down) and Rhys Darby (late of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords) to gauge their interest in joining the cast later this season.
We haven’t seen either of these names on anyone’s list, but upon hearing them…y’know, neither of those guys seem like a terrible option. Darby, in particular, was outstanding as the clueless manager and New Zealand consulate on HBO’s Flight of The Conchords, and it’d be very easy to imagine his cluelessness making for an easy transition into Michael Scott’s shoes. What do you have to say for yourself, writer and executive producer Paul Lieberstein?
Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein confirms that they’re “having discussions” about introducing a new salesman into Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, but he wouldn’t say whether this person was being groomed to necessarily replace Carell’s Michael Scott. “We haven’t settled exactly who will take over,” says Lieberstein, adding that promoting a current staffer to the top job remains a viable option as well.
Danny McBride is currently at work on the second season of HBO’s Eastbound and Down (and thank God, because we need more of that show), while Darby is…well, not up to all that much, really. In fact, his schedule’s wide open. What do you think, folks? Would you rather see Kenny-effing-Powers in charge at Dunder Mifflin, or the man who once sang “Leggy Blonde”? My vote goes to Darby, but it’s a close race. Sound off with your own suggestions below, my precious snowflakes.
UPDATE: I thought we’d jazz things up a bit with a poll, so cast your votes below before you head down to the comments section with your feedback:Who would you rather see take over for Steve Carell on “The Office”?survey software
Didja vote? Because I went through all the trouble of making that poll. Come on, just pick one. See, that wasn’t so hard, was it? By the way, if you’re unfamiliar with Flight of The Conchords or Eastbound and Down, be sure to visit the HBO section of your local Best Buy the next time you’re in there. Stock up, and you won’t be disappointed: both series are fantastic. Be forewarned on Eastbound, though: if you’re not into profuse swearing, you’re not gonna dig it. Anyway, enough rambling: get to commenting, Slappies!
