Unity believes, as do most other spiritual traditions, in the eternal nature of the soul and the existence of life after death. Jesus, in fact, said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst: the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).
Unity holds that “as a part of God, that which we are eternally had no beginning nor does it have any end. It is really enough for us to know – that life persists, that it is indeed eternal – and then to get on with the life that we are experiencing in the here and now. We are always greater than what we express, and the purpose of our life is to express more and more of what we eternally are. We do that by living each moment of life as a joyful song of exultation to God” (Jafolla, The Quest, p. 356).
There are individuals, however, that require concrete proof that something beyond this material world exists. Fortunately, science has begun the process of proving that it does. There are others who deny that certain God-given gifts exist rather than understanding those gifts as evidence of a loving God and as proof of eternal life. Thankfully, science has begun the process of proving that these gifts are real as well.
Gary Schwartz, PhD, holds a doctorate in personality psychology from Harvard and was a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Yale before joining the faculty of the University of Arizona, where he directs the Laboratory for the Advances of Consciousness and Health. Dr. Schwartz’s laboratory is one of only two universities facilities worldwide that scientifically studies human energy systems and psychic ability.
William James wrote that “in order to disprove the law that all crows are black, it is enough to find one white crow.” In terms of true psychic ability, Dr. Schwartz identified Allison DuBois as that white crow. Not only did Allison DuBois (click here to view video on Allison DuBois) submit to scientific evaluation of her abilities and pass with statistically significant results, but so did John Edward (click here to view video of John Edward and his connection with Steve Irwin’s family) and MaryRose Occhino (click here to view video trailer for her SyFy show “Mary Knows Best”). The experimental design was a multi-centered and double-blind design which controlled for any possibility of fraud, deception, subtle cueing, or statistical coincidence. The most parsimonious explanation that accounts for the largest amount of the data is the survival of consciousness hypothesis (Schwartz, The Truth about Medium: Extraordinary experiments with the real Allison DuBois and other remarkable psychics, p. 136). Please view the video on the Laboratory for the Advances of Consciousness and Health at the conclusion of this article.
The mediums who participate in Schwartz’s experiments are putting careers and reputations on the line. They are aware that if they ever cheat or commit a fraudulent act, they will be publicly embarrassed by Schwartz’s laboratory. The final promise of the researchers at the Laboratory for the Advances of Consciousness and Health is “If it is real, it will be revealed. If it is fake, we’ll find the mistake” (Schwartz, The Afterlife Experiments: Breakthrough Scientific Evidence of Life After Death, p. 263).
The final conclusion of these experiments is this – “that mind is first. Consciousness exists independently of the brain. It does not depend upon the brain for its survival. Mind is first, the brain is second. The brain is not the creator of mind, it is a powerful tool of the mind. The brain is an antenna/receiver for the mind, like a sophisticated television or cell phone” (Schwartz, The Afterlife Experiments: Breakthrough Scientific Evidence of Life After Death, p. 267).
