Former boxing 4 division titleholder James Toney (72-6-3, 44 KO’s boxing) made some interesting comments to MMAweekly.com recently while preparing for his UFC debut against hall of famer Randy Couture (18-10, 7 KO’s, 3 submissions MMA) in Boston this coming August.
What Toney said:
“Everybody, all the big guys in boxing are scared to fight me. I can’t get a fight with the Bitch-ko sisters (Vitali and Waldimir Klitschko). I can’t get a fight with David Haye. I can’t get a fight with the top two contenders,” Toney told MMAWeekly Radio.
Toney has does nothing to deserve a title shot at the Klitschko brothers or David Haye. He hasn’t beaten a top 10 heavyweight since defeating Evander Holyfield in 2003 and his two most recent fights were a knockout over journeyman Matt Greer and a split decision in which he struggled against fringe contender Fres Oquendo.
What Toney said:
“Look, I have a legitimate heavyweight title and nobody wants to fight me. What’s the problem here? So I see that MMA is doing their thing. Everybody is fighting each other. It’s just like the glory days of boxing like in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Everybody is fighting each other. That’s how MMA is. Everybody is fighting each other. I said, let me get in on some of this,”
Toney holds the IBA heavyweight title, which is not a legitimate title. No one cares about it. It means nothing and I hope the UFC doesn’t promote Toney as boxing’s heavyweight champion of the world. It’s simply not true.
However, he is right that in MMA the best are fighting the best for the most part. UFC promotes most of the best fighters in the world and matches them up against one another freely. Save for a situation where a fighter Such as Fedor Emelianenko, who fights for rival promotion Strikeforce, cannot be matched up with UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar due to MMA’s business model not involving co-promotions, the world of MMA does tend to make the best fights with the best fighters.
So now that we sorted through Toney’s spin, best of luck August 28th. Try not to let UFC president Dana White make an “example” out of you.
