Every Saturday morning from 10 to 11 AM on WVLK AM 590, Tommy Baker hosts the “Home Hotline” radio program. Tommy and his guests offer reliable advice and tips about home improvements and remodeling. Tommy also answers questions that you phone in to him during the show by calling 877-777-0590.
Tommy recently invited the author into the radio studio to observe a live broadcast of the show and to interview him afterward. Following is a summary of the show. Click here for Tommy Baker Part 2: The person.
The radio show
Callers phoned in interesting questions about numerous topics. Tommy answered the questions and offered the following advice:
Follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions when painting outdoors. If the outside air temperature is too hot, the paint may dry on the brush prematurely. Also, the paint may dry on the painted surface before the brush strokes have disappeared.
Before replacing your existing old house windows or covering the frames with aluminum, be aware of the different woods and wood preservatives that have changed in the past twenty years. During the late 1980’s, some window frames were constructed using a fast-growth species of wood and treated with a less effective preservative due to federal regulations.
Install soffit vents around the perimeter of the house rather than installing two roof fans in a house that does not have soffit vents. Relying on attic fans when there are no soffit vents will create a stale air space in the corners of the attic and hot spots. Tommy told the caller that attic fans have been known to start attic fires. Tommy prefers the use of pop vents or ridge vents.
Crawl space ventilation
There are differing opinions about whether or not to insulate a crawl space. Traditional advice is to insulate a crawl space and close the vents in the winter to save on heating bills. Tommy suggests that you leave the crawl space vents open all year for ventilation, unless there are pipes in the crawl space that can freeze. Check to make sure you have enough crawl space vents. Many homes have an inadequate amount of crawl space ventilation. Some current thinking is not to insulate the floor over a crawl space. This will keep the crawl space warm and dry enough to prevent high humidity, mold and mildew from forming in the crawl space. Tommy referred to mold as “the new radon”.
One window supplier may charge more for a window than another supplier of a similar window because of higher advertising costs and profits built into the price.
During the show
During the show, Producer Dave Kesling interacted with Tommy and the callers, commercial ads about local businesses were read, network broadcasting was aired and Alan Edwards provided news updates.
First callers can influence the other callers
Tommy said that the topic of the first caller’s question sometimes causes the subsequent callers to ask questions about the first caller’s topic.
