I got a kick out of seeing the marching bands working out in the heat of the summer. We all forget that the band plays a significant role at football games. A good band adds to the experience for the fans, players and everyone associated with the evening. Plus we often forget that those kids work very hard so they can go out on the field and perform. Make no mistake, just like the players, those memories will last a lifetime for them
Did you know that there is a football rule called ‘the band of Blue’ rule? It says that if the band is out on the field too long, you cannot flag the home team. Apparently it happened to CR Jefferson’s band of Blue a few years ago. Now if it ‘the players try to take the field, and the marching band refuses to yield’ (come on, you know the song. American Pie by Don McLean), you take it to the Athletics Director. If the performance goes on too long, you call Boone (Iowa High School Athletic Association). Rarely does it happen. Once when I was officiating, a coach demanded I call Boone the next Monday. I told him I wasn’t going to do it, and if he felt that he needed to, that he should. He didn’t.

Did you happen to see the new rules regarding tailgating at Iowa football games? Personally I think the rules, on the whole, aren’t too bad. And this is from someone who spends $250.00 a year to park. I do think the open container thing will be hard to enforce. Try to walk up Melrose Avenue an hour before kickoff. The rules are intended to stop the bad, not to punish the good. I know our parties, along with most others won’t change. Most people keep to themselves and have a nice time. The ones that don’t, and think it is cool to get drunk to oblivion, and act like an idiot will have a problem. It should be ok.http://bleacherreport.com/tb/b5qcD
Still no word on Brandon Wegher, and resolution needs to come soon. The fall semester starts on Monday, and in order for him to be eligible, he must be enrolled in school. The rumors are still swirling, but I think reality is hitting. He is not here, and right now it looks like he won’t be. Time to move on. The Hawks will be fine with or without him. Oh yea, Coach Ferentz has great respect for his opponent and the teams knows they have to work hard to be successful. He tells us that all the time..
One other training camp note, the coaches are high on frosh James Morris from Solon. The two time Iowa high school player of the year has been impressing coaches with his play at linebacker. I am not surprised. Morris is the best player I ever officiated. And I guarantee you, Spartan fans and foes from the past four years will tell you the same thing.

Ex-CR Prairie standout Scott Schebler inked deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers this week. He was offered a signing bonus of $300,000 to turn pro. Schebler was a 26th round selection. Ex-Xavier Saint pitcher Jon Keller did not come to terms with the Seattle Mariners, deciding instead to take his skills to Lincoln, and the University of Nebraska. Keller had been drafted in the 11th round in June’s MLB draft.iowaprepsports.com/featured/2010/08/17/prairie-graduate-schebler-agrees-to-deal-with-dodgers
In the unfinished business department, I wanted to give props to Ralph Palmer for the job he and his band of merry men and women did with the recent National Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. By all accounts it was a huge success
And though Brett Favre is back, Kurt Warner is still retired. And by the way, congrats are in order for Zach Johnson, as he finished third at the PGA.
Football is around the corner. Lets get pumped.
