Juan Manuel Marquez is still living in the past. If he thinks that his performance against Juan Diaz earns him the right to a third fight with Manny Pacquiao, he is surely mistaken. Ever since their last meeting, their paths have taken in different directions that probably will never again meet.
Juan Manuel Marquez’ drumbeaters, which immediately proclaim that the Mexican is ready for a trilogy with rival Manny Pacquiao, are themselves living in the past. After the so-so win over Diaz, those people who said that Marquez deserves another shot at the current P4P king should better consult their ophthalmologists to check on their vision for nowhere in the fight screams the necessity of a Pacquiao trilogy.
In the Diaz fight, Marquez showed his heart and the skills that made him one of the great fighters that ever laced the gloves but with a caveat; Marquez ‘s age is catching up to him. His punches were slow and his reflexes are not the way they used to be. His defense is so- so and can easily be penetrated. It was a good but unimpressive performance that should make Marquez and his handlers ponder his future at this point of his career.
If a slow and washed- up fighter like Juan Diaz can easily hit him with his not-so-powerful punches, one can only imagine the damage that a fighter like Manny Pacquiao can do to him. It was obvious that despite their two previous close wars inside the ring, Marquez is no longer in Pacquiao’s league.
The Filipino superstar has moved on and is fighting on a weight division that many believes Marquez will never venture into again after his disappointing fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. But if Marquez’ camp really wants the fight and can resolve the purse and weight issues with Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank, then maybe why not?
Some people, including this writer, are not averse to a trilogy though but only if Manny Pacquiao cannot find a credible opponent after the Antonio Margarito fight especially in light of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s seeming reluctance to face him.
Besides, it will be nice for Manny Pacquiao to put a closure to the issue between him and Juan Manuel Marquez. A trilogy is also a good way for Manny Pacquiao to stamp his class and silence all the naysayers who thinks that he is ducking the Mexican and that he was gifted a win in one of their two previous clashes.
So, all is not lost for Marquez though, if he wants Manny Pacquiao to even entertain the very remote thought of fighting him again, he should at least earn it. Marquez should fight next a credible opponent that can make his case better.
And that fighter is Amir Khan, the WBA light welterweight champion who is very vocal of his desire to fight Marquez for his next fight. If he gets past Amir Khan then maybe there is really some sense in him and Manny Pacquiao doing the trilogy.
But for now, Marquez should better stay away from Manny Pacquiao.
The boxing fans at the Allen Park Recreation Center gave their opinions on the possibility of a Manny Pacquiao- Juan Manuel Marquez trilogy.
“No way, with a performance like that against a slow and obviously faded fighter, there is no way that he is getting the trilogy.”- Mandy R, Highland Park
“If only for old times sake, yes they can have a trilogy but Manny will brutalize him if ever that fight happens.” – Andon D, Allen Park
“The only reason that Marquez wants to fight Pacquiao is money. He wants a big purse for his retirement and he can only get that from a fight with Pacquiao.” – Jeremy, Detroit
“I want Manny Pacquiao to fight JMM to shut him up.” -Lando, Lincoln Park
“It will probably a good fight for 2-3 rounds then Manny Pacquiao will overwhelm him.” – Mike C, Taylor
