Like many fine establishments in this area, the charming Village Market in South Freeport has closed its doors because of poor sales and little traffic. Lacking the support of the surrounding community, the fledgling operation was barely open for three months before owner Paul Martino, a native New Yorker, threw in the towel.
The tiny community certainly could use a lively meeting place, and one that serves food would be ideal. Yet despite the prime location, right next door to the post office and across from a church, with an elementary school a stone’s throw away, few residents chose to support the venture.
Perhaps the next owner–the store is currently up for sale–will be a native Mainer. If so, just watch it take off!
