President Obama and the left like to talk about sacrifice as if it is some sort of patriotic duty to let the
government take your hard earned money and give it to another. For instance: You have the right to
drive a Chevy Volt if you choose. But why should the government subsidize that choice by taking money
from the pockets of your fellow citizens to support your choice? If you want to drive a car that costs
$41,000.00 so be it but you better be able to pay for it without expecting a subsidy from your neighbor.
I received more than my fair share of hate mail over the weekend from so called, freedom loving
liberals who were unhappy with my criticism of GM, their choice to build a new plant in Mexico, and the
Chevy Volt. It’s actually quite funny, these emails always start the same way; I’m a conservative but…
insert liberal drivel here. Personally I could care less what you drive because in America, we have the
freedom of choice, although the left is doing everything in their power to take that away. Liberals
conveniently confuse regulation with freedom and taxation with charity.
Ayn Rand said “the man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters, and intends to
be the master.” The left likes to wax poetic about freedom but then passes legislation that is thousands of pages long, to dictate to you, what you can and cannot do. Why? Because they intend for government to be your master. The Healthcare Bill and The Financial Reform Bill are perfect examples of that.
During the first 150 years of our country’s history, The Code of Federal Regulations fit into two volumes about the size of a dictionary. The subsequent 85 years have seen us add so many regulations that it
now requires more than 25 feet of shelf space to house all the federal regulations that have been
imposed in the name of freedom and that is excluding these two massive pieces of legislation.
The Financial Reform Bill has created the infrastructure whereby the government can seize any
company it “deems to big to fail” without any congressional or judicial oversight. It also exempts the
Securities and Exchange Commission from the Freedom of Information Act. Does that sound like
freedom and transparency?
The Health Care Bill laid the groundwork for the government to control everything that happens to you
as a person. As Kevin Hasset points out in his article, the bill creates hundreds of new programs,
entities, and entitlements while granting sweeping authority to Health and Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius. She will be setting up a bureaucracy so cumbersome and complex it’s beyond
comprehension; again without any congressional or judicial oversight.
Remember when Nancy Pelosi said “we have to pass the bill so you can find out what’s in it?” Well
Representative Kevin Brady asked his staff to prepare a flowchart of how the healthcare legislation will
work and it reveals a truly frightening picture of what the best healthcare system in the world will
transform into. According to Congressman Brady, “for Americans, as well as Congressional
Democrats who didn’t bother to read the bill, this first look at the final health care law confirms what
many fear, that reform morphed into a monstrosity of new bureaucracies, mandates, taxes and
rationing that will drive up health care costs, hurt seniors and force our most intimate health care
choices into the hands of Washington bureaucrats. If this is what passes for health care reform in
America, then God help us all.”
President Obama told us that his administration would be the most transparent in history but time and
time again he has proven to be exactly the opposite. He told us time and again that all negotiations
would be aired live on CSPAN but of course this never came to fruition. His campaign motto was “hope
and change.” Well if that meant changing the greatest country in the history of the world into a crippled,
dilapidated socialist country, then he was right.
Keep up the good fight…
