Its a bustling world out there and there’s only one person who can tame it with such flair. Pain is her name and definitely her game, its Dixie Derby Girl #7 PAIN RUSSELL.
A member of the Dixie Derby Girls since January 2008, she’s a stealthy blocker for the Rocket City Rollers and takes power to a whole other level. She’s feared on the track, and spent her fair share in the penalty box, due in part to her weapon of choice, her FIST.
dampfang.com: How did you first get involved in roller derby?
PR: I saw a myspace ad, and replied to it.
dampfang.com: What is the significance or explanation behind the derby name PAIN RUSSELL?
PR: I wanted to keep it old skool with a twist, so Jane Russell was a pin-up girl who is very busty, so I added my own twist and became PAIN Russell.
dampfang.com: What does roller derby mean to you?
PR: Derby isn’t something you join, you either love it or you don’t. You don’t ever quit, you coach or do something else within the league when you don’t skate anymore. Its a lifetime commitment.
dampfang.com: What has been your favorite derby memory/highlight?
PR: My first away game, we killed the Northwest Arkansas team.
dampfang.com: What has been your lowest game moment?
PR: This season has been full of way too many downs for me to pick just one, its been a rough season for me.
dampfang.com: What is your signature move on the track?
PR: I like to hit right off the line when no one is expecting it.
dampfang.com: What is your favorite rival team to play?
PR: I enjoy the game it doesn’t matter who we play.
dampfang.com: What would be your toughest obstacle or opponent on the track?
PR: I am and will always be my toughest obstacle.
dampfang.com: What is outside derby life like and how do you balance it?
PR: It’s really hard to find the right balance and it’s a constant struggle, but I get a lot of support from my family.
dampfang.com: What off-skates role do you play in the league?
PR: I help with the events committee and volunteer anywhere else I can when I’m available.
dampfang.com: What has been your worst injury?
PR: I hyper-extended my knee.
dampfang.com: How about the worst Injury you caused?
PR: Just some bruises that I know of.
dampfang.com: How do you get pumped up before a bout?
PR: I just try to relax and focus.
dampfang.com: What music do you listen to before a bout?
PR: Heavy Metal! (Korn, Metallica, Tool, White Zombie)
dampfang.com: Future Plans/Goals in Derby?
PR: I want to skate until my body won’t allow me to and then maybe I’ll switch to coaching or start the junior league (I have some Baby Pains looking to get into derby).
dampfang.com: You have a very unique personality. What is your derby fashion/style preference?
PR: Shorts, Tights, and socks!
dampfang.com: What is the craziest/ most embarrasing story from the track?
PR: I was skating back to the bench after the jam was called off and it was half time, I tripped over my own feet and face planted on the floor. A fat lip and a cut on the bridge of my nose, all I could think was “Smooth Move, Exlax!’
