When Ford dropped the full details on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 this morning, it did not come as much of a surprise. Between hints from Mark Fields a while back and a comment slipped by a Grand Am race announcer last weekend, we all knew that Ford was cooking up something special for a new Mustang trimline. However, the addition of the limited edition Laguna Seca package for the 2012 Boss 302 was a big surprise.
The 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca package begins with all of the basic amenities found in the standard 2012 Boss 302 and Ford decided that the 440 horsepower Boss engine was enough for the track-ready Laguna Seca package. This allowed the Ford engineers to devote more time to perfecting this track package for the new Boss 302 Mustang with many of the design cues being taken from the Boss 302R race models.
First, Ford went inside of the 2012 Boss 302 and removed the rear seat – replacing it with an X-brace (shown in the gallery to the right) to help improve chassis rigidity along with reducing weight a bit. Ford states that the X-brace allows for a 10% stiffer chassis, along with allowing for enhanced suspension tuning for track use. The Recaro race seats that are optional in the 2012 Boss 302 street car are standard for the Laguna Seca package and these are the same seats offered in the SVT Shelby GT500.
Like the standard Boss 302, the 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca package offers a close ratio transmission, short throw shifter, 3.73 gears and a beefed up suspension system but the track package takes those suspension upgrades a step further. The adjustable shocks and struts are similar to those found in the non-Laguna Seca Boss models but an even larger rear stabilizer bar and higher rate springs on all four corners make this limited edition package even more capable on the road course.
The braking system of the 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca package is similar to that found in the standard Boss 302 but the track package features Ford Racing’s brake cooling ductwork to keep the big binders cool during track time. Finally, Ford added Boss 302 Laguna Seca-specific 19” alloy wheels – finished in bright red and measuring an inch wider in the rear for optimum handling and launch traction – all wrapped in race compound high performance tires.
The interior and suspension have been upgraded by Ford Motor Company but the exterior has also received upgrades over the standard 2012 Boss 302. An even-more-aggressive front spoiler helps to offer increased downforce over the standard Boss 30 fascia along with funneling air into the cooling systems for the engine and the brakes. Out back, the Boss 302 Laguna Seca package offers a rear spoiler that adds an amazing 90lbs of downforce at 140mph. The 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca package is available in just Black or Ingot Silver with red highlights everywhere – from the wheels to the mirrors to the Boss C-stripe – giving this high performance, track tuned Mustang a truly unique appearance from any other car on the road. Topping it all off and reminding everyone of the inspiration behind this package, the standard Mustang rear logo has been removed in place of a badge bearing the outline of the famed Laguna Seca race course.
David Pericak, Ford Mustang chief engineer, had this to say about the 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca package:
Balance is the key on Boss, and even more so on Laguna Seca. A winning race car has to do everything well, and we’ve had the ability to test all the engineering that went into Boss Laguna Seca on the Ford Racing 302R. It’s not for everyone: It’s stiffer, there’s no back seat, and the aero package is designed for downforce, not speed bumps in the mall parking lot. But for hard-core Mustang racers who want something they can occasionally drive on the street, to shows or whatever, Laguna Seca is the car they’ve been waiting for – and they’re not going to be disappointed.
