Ever thought about having a massage to fix your knee problems? How about to heal a sprained ankle? Well, if you choose to do so, massage, or specifically, Thai massage, might be the way to go.
Massage is much more ubiquitous in Thailand, than it is here – even on the westside of Los Angeles. It is done in more casual environments and as a communal or social event. A Thai native might find herself going for a massage with her girlfriends after work or shopping or while lying on the beach. She won’t find the serene, silent backdrop so common here, but a more chatty, more everyday part of the day’s environ. She might be chatting it up with the therapist, or her girlfriends in a more social scene.
Massage is an integral part of Thai culture and their therapists are very well trained and respected, often learning their profession for years. The schools are within the temples and part of a sacred tradition.
After a basic level of training, therapists can go on to learn more advanced techniques and become proficient in physical therapy and healing. They can treat knee injuries, ankle sprains, multiple sclerosis patients- even help those undergoing chemotherapy deal with the side effects of their medicine. More flexibility can be had; better circulation, and reduced down time are common results.
Thai massage has become quite popular the last 10 years or so in L.A. Shops can be found in many mini malls, especially in the area known as Thai Town in Hollywood.
Thai massage is not a completely passive massage, you will be asked to participate actively for brief periods. There will be a lot of stretching and if you have a good therapist you will feel like you just had a great workout afterwards.
If you live on the westside or are planning a visit to shop and lunch on Abbot Kinney in Venice, call or stop in at Lamai Thai. It’s a bit hidden, but located across the street from Hal’s Bar and Grill. Lamai Thai has combined eastern and western atmosphere and techniques to get the best of both worlds. You will have a peaceful, quiet massage, including many Thai yoga stretches performed with loose clothing on, and a more western hands on massage with a soothing balm applied to the skin.
The owners, Kevin and Diana, are a delightful western couple, whom spent ample time over 25 years, falling in love with Thai culture and massage. They imported it here when they opened their shop four years ago and soon outgrew their space on Abbot Kinney and moved down the block to more roomier surroundings. They’ve created a beautiful, calm retreat accessible morning or night, with long hours making it super easy to stop in.
Check out their website for favorite Thai recipes from their well trained staff you can try at home too.
You can also try them out at First Fridays on Abbot Kinney, get a free 5 minute massage the first Friday night of each month.
