Both have just won Wimbledon titles and both are the number one ranked players in tennis, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal also both use Power Plate, one of the latest exercise aids.
“On tour, playing back to back matches is tough on your body. Being ready the next day is the difference between winning or losing. If I can accelerate the recovery and healing process, I have a definite advantage. With my Power Plate, I have that advantage,” says Williams.
“This is the way I work out regularly,” commented Nadal.

Power Plate, which resembles a weight scale, has a base which vibrates about 1/16 of an inch between 20 to 50 times per second. The vibration increases the force of gravity making normal exercise positions harder to hold. A typical routine on the Power Plate involves exercises on the machine for up to a minute with similar rest periods between.
To counter the constant vibration, your muscles are continually tensed and relaxed to keep your balance. The Whole Body Vibration or WBV contracts muscles 30 to 50 times per second. The exercises are the normal push-ups and floor squats etc., but on the Power Plate, the muscles fatigue quicker resulting in a shorter routine.
“This is not a magic bullet that helps people lose weight without doing anything,” says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. “If you are a healthy individual, wbv training should be a supplement to a sensible diet and exercise program.”
There are doubters such as The Healthy Skeptic which states,” studies offered on the Power Plate website don’t provide any real support to the claims made by anyone associated with this machine and certainly don’t come close to supporting the claim the Power Plate can deliver any benefits even remotely comparable to the benefits derived from traditional training methods.”
The machines range from $3,500 for the home unit to $9,250 for the gym model. Soloflex has a simpler version of the Power Plate that sells for just $395. Power Plates can be found in select gyms, rehabilitation centers and due to price, private owners tend to be celebrities.
It would be strongly advised to consult with a physician before trying the Power Plate and though more research is needed, the results for Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal show this a training aid worth watching.
