Telluride Blues and Brews Festival (photos, video)
TELLURIDE, Colorado — World travelers who love music will be glad to know that in less than a month, blues and rock music fans will descend on Telluride, Colorado for the 17th edition of the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival.
The line-up this year is headlined by B.B. King, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band, and George Thorogood and the Destroyers, in addition to secondary headliners Galactic, Allen Toussiant, and Jimmy Vaughn, to name but a small few.
As a destination festival, it’s not your heat stroke inducing cluster of thousands, quite the opposite, in fact. Intimacy is the key word, with just enough room for a tamer crowd of music devotees to enjoy some legendary musicians.
And those world-traveling music devotees will also be standing in the shadow of the overwhelmingly gorgeous San Juan Mountains that surround the festival and house the small town of Telluride itself.
World travelers will particularly enjoy this part of the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival, especially as the region is aptly labeled the “Alps of the West” due to the mountains’ dramatic and jagged landscape.
This is as relaxing of an experience as any festival can get.
Given its September date, you can expect mild t-shirt days and very cool jacket needing nights at the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. The real treat comes Saturday with the brews portion of the fest– the Grand Tasting.
This is when over 50 of the best microbreweries in the Southwest and beyond open up all their taps for sampling and competition.
With all that Telluride Blues & Brews offers, world travelers with kids will be happy to know that the whole experience still manages to stay very family friendly. It has a Kids Parade and other kiddy carnival trappings to keep the little ones entertained while the adults play.
Something pleasantly unusual about Telluride Blues and Brews is that the music at Telluride Town Park ends no later than 9 pm. It may seem too early, but it leaves plenty of time to head back to your hotel, regroup and head to any one of the Juke Joints or late night shows.
This is a smart scheduling feature that takes full advantage of the town’s small size and accessibility.
A selection of the mid-day bands (look for Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears on Saturday) will play rowdy late night sets scattered around the many bars on Main Street Telluride. If you’re a world traveler and also a night owl, this is very much your scene.
Telluride Blues and Brews is the kind of festival that changes your mind as to what these events can be and by the end, turns first timers into regulars.
I started out four years ago and haven’t looked back since.
