The Mobile Press Register reported that The Alabama State Tourism officials unveiled on Sunday August 15, 2010 a new Television Ad featuring a past winner of “American Idol” Taylor Hicks, taking part in a wide range effort to help the industry move past the damage caused by the massive Oil Spill.
Taylor Hicks the winner of “American Idol” season 5 is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and grew up on the Gulf Coast. His grandmother is a resident of Gulf Shores and many venues he’s played prior to his “American Idol” experience was on the Gulf Coast.. In April of this year a Transatlantic Oil Rig The Deep Water Horizon owned by BP, exploded just off the coast of Louisiana killing eleven men, injuring several workers, and the well that pumped the oil into the vessel started spewing massive amounts of oil into the Gulf. Many business and residents are in a financial crisis, the marine life is in serious jeopardy.. People that made their living on the Gulf, are facing financial hardships. Taylor realizing the danger and the financial burden this oil spill is causing decided to do something about it. Taylor told USA Today back in June, “When I first heard about the spill, I knew that it was gonna be bigger than many thought. I initially started reaching out to different groups and raising awareness. We all have to be pro-active in making sure that the companies involved and the government see this disaster through from beginning to end. We’re still bracing for more of an impact. It’s something that I feel I have to be vocal and be very pro-active in.”
This Campaign that Taylor is working on with the Alabama Tourism is an effort to bring tourism back to the Gulf Coast. The 30 second add features Taylor Hicks saying, “Hey, I’m Taylor Hicks, and I can’t help but boogie when I’m back in the sugary white sands of Alabama’s beaches,” then he plays a short little tune on his harmonica.
Officials are hoping to start airing the add next week. It is vital to the Gulf Coast business owners that vacationers realize that it is safe to visit the beaches here and if there was a possibility of any danger at all, there would be public awareness to the fact, Many celeberties have come forth to assist in what is now considered Gulf Aid, including Jimmy Buffett who did a free benefit concert to bring some revenue back into the city.v The Wharf on Orange beach announced there will be a concert on September 25, 2010 including Hank Williams Jr, who was born in Louisiana but some of his roots are from Alabama. Gretchen Wison, and Lee Brice will be performing as well to help aid in the Gulf Oil disaster.
With the Taylor Hick’s new ad, and the concerts scheduled for Gulf Aid, residents and business owners are hoping this will be a big help with this major financial crisis. Now with the new cap in place, “Static Kill” is now in effect and seems to be working, everyone is hoping this is the beginning of the end to this nightmare. The compensation that BP is ordered to pay could take weeks, months or maybe years. Only the good Lord knows what the future holds for the Gulf Coast, but with people like Taylor Hicks, and Jimmy Buffett people that grew up on the Gulf Coast that respect and appreciate what the Gulf is all about, can help get a jump start on the restoration of the beautiful Gulf Coast and help begin the healing process. In the meantime citizens can volunteer to help with the clean up crews to help make the beaches beautiful again.
