World War Two has provided more than enough material to keep Christian fiction authors writing for generations to come. In 1994, the first title in Humboldt County author Michael Phillips’ Secret of the Rose series was published by Tyndale House. The Eleventh Hour was to be the first in a series of books that would span the years between 1937 and 1992.
The Eleventh Hour opens the series in Prussia in 1937 on the country estate of Baron von Dortmann and his daughter, Sabina. As neighboring Poland falls victim to the Nazi war machine, the baron and Sabina must flee their estate – and the baron’s prized rose garden – and seek safety somewhere far away from the ever-nearing German forces.
In book 2, A Rose Remembered, Sabina is searching for her father. With the help of the Jewish Underground, Sabina is able to obtain information about the whereabouts of her father, but it seems every time she gets close, another cryptic clue is found instead. She must also guard her identity from the man she almost married if she wants to remain alive.
Escape to Freedom is the third book in the Secret of the Rose series. Sabina has finally located her father, but they are not out of danger yet. Sabina, Baron von Dortmann, and friend and ally, Matthew McCallum must find a way to elude their pursuers and make it out of Communist Germany.
Secret of the Rose book 4 is titled Dawn of Liberty and it is 1992 as the book opens on a united Germany. Matthew and Sabina return to Sabina’s homeland to attend an evangelism conference and attempt to visit Lebenhaus, the estate Sabina called home so many years ago. Accompanied by their son, Tad, a reporter, they learn that while Germany may be united, people still exist who do things the “old” way and Sabina is forced to pass the Secret of the Rose on to the next generation.
