Steve Tyler has inked a deal to join American Idol as a judge says bandmate Tom Hamilton.
The New Jersey Star Ledger reports that Aerosmith bassist has confirmed that the charismatic lead singer has definitely signed on to replace Simon Cowell on Fox’s hit TV talent show.
“Steven is doing ‘American Idol.’ The ink is dry on that,” says Hamilton.
“Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don’t know if ‘American Idol’ will be rock ‘n’ roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler.”
Speculation has been rampant for weeks that the “Boston Bad Boy” would fill one of the judge vacancies left on “Idol” by the departure of Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and the axing of Kara DioGuardi.
Tyler himself has confirmed he had been approach by Fox executives and told media after a Las Vegas performance, “I’m doing it!” but later backstepped to say that the deal was still being “negotiated.”
“Idol” representatives have not yet confirmed the report and will not likely do so until after the September long weekend.
Tyler’s potential jump from the big stage to the small screen has both his Aerosmith fans and some of his bandmates biting their nails.
Guitarist Joe Perry blasted his fellow Toxic Twin during a Boston Herald interview for neglecting to mention his American Idol intentions to the band.
Fan concern was elevated when Tyler was apparently bumped off the catwalk by Perry during Aerosmith’s performance in Toronto Tuesday (8/17/10) into the crowd, eerily replaying the accident last summer in which Tyler broke his should after a similar during an Aerosmith in Sturgis, ND which caused the tour’s cancellation.
Tyler was not injured, but there has been much fan speculation whether the incident was accidental or perhaps revenge on Perry’s part.

In the meantime, Tyler, Perry and company continue their “Cocked, Locked, and Ready to Rock” tour in Omaha, NE tonight (8/19/10).
Aerosmith kick off their Western Canada leg along with special guests Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in Winnipeg at the MTS Centre on September 8/10 and wraps up on Sept. 16 in Vancouver, BC.
