Summer is winding down and the nip of autumn will soon fill the air. There is still time, though, to take a mini-vacation and attend local dance events. Summer school for dancers isn’t over quite yet.
Blend dance with philanthropy by attending “Shimmy and Shake for Autism” at the Kiva Center at Kent State University (E. Summit Street and Risman Drive in Kent) on Sunday, August 22 from 6pm to 9pm. This belly dance event is being held to raise awareness of and funds for local autism support groups for families and individuals dealing with autism spectrum disorders. Tickets are $12 in advance (can purchase throguh PayPal, contact email@example.com), $15 at the door. Children under 12 years old are admitted free.
The weekend of August 20-22 brings a workshop and show to Habeeba’s Columbus (Habeeba’s Belly Dance and Women’s Activity Center, 1145R Chesapeake Avenue) with master dancer and choreographer Mohamed El Hosseny of Suez, Egypt. You can travel across the world to experience this soloist with the famous Reda Troupe as he teaches pop balady, saidi, fusion and oriental combinations. On Saturday, Mohamed El Hosseny will perform with other Midwest dance professionals at the Columbus Pe3rforminfg Arts Center, 549 Franklin Avenue in Columbus. Admission to the show is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. An informal dance party will be held on Friday night at the studio, $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Majestic Belly Dancing by Fariba (1190 Kenny Center Mall) in Columbus will be hosting a day of Persian fun on Sunday, August 29 at their studio. From 3-5pm, you can experience the ancient art of eye brow threading ($15 per person) to create a more glamorous you.
