SIGGRAPH 2010, the 37th annual conference and exhibition on computer graphics and interactive technology, opens Sunday, July 25, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The conference focuses on creative programs related to science, art, animation, music, gaming, interactivity, education, and the web.
Event sponsor ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) expects to bring together 25,000 computer graphic and interactive technical professionals from around the globe for the 5-day event which includes a 3-day exhibition with more than 200 vendors. The conference will include the popular Computer Animation Festival, Electronic Theatre, research paper presentations, panels manned by industry experts, courses in computer graphics, and this year, for the first time, a new program called SIGGRAPH Dailies! The dailies, which will run Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00-7:30 PM, will feature backstories from production artists, craftsmen, and directors.
The event, perhaps considered the most prestigious forum for the publication of computer graphics research, engendered a slew of papers for consideration this year. It is estimated that only about 20% of submissions were accepted. In addition, there were more than 750 professional and amateur submissions from around the world to the Computer Animation Festival’s annual film contest. Awards for Best in Show, Jury Award, and Best Student Project were announced in June. Winners’ films and several others will air in the Electronic Theater in the evenings.
The Computer Animation Festival also highlights top visual effects for feature films. This year those movies will include “Avatar,” “The Last Airbender,” Sherlock Holmes,” “Iron Man 2,” “Prince of Persia,” “2012,” and “Alice in Wonderland.” The festival has been an official qualifying event for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences “Best Animated Short Film” Academy Award since 1999.
Cynthia Gordon, Owner, MedAnimations, President, Orange County Multimedia Association, and a professional medical illustrator and Flash animator in her own right, noted,
I love attending the annual SIGGRAPH Conference whenever it’s held in the Los Angeles area. In one week I learn so much about cutting edge technologies that my head spins! From the screenings of the best animated shorts, commercials, and sequences of the best special effects that you’ll ever see, to the hands-on experiences in the Emerging Technologies space and a walk around the huge Exhibit Hall, it’s non-stop inspiration for my creativity. I can’t wait for July 25th!
The conference opens at 9:00 AM Sunday, July 25th, and the Exhibition opens on Tuesday, July 27, at 9:30 AM. SIGGRAPH 2010 is open to the public, with several registration categories. For more information or to register, click here.
