The fear of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is one far too many parents experience. However for most of us, it is simply a fear. However for many local area families it is a reality. In May 2010 one local Katy police officer reported that he had experienced 4 calls to homes in his patrol area, all of which ended in the death of a child. There is no support group in the Houston area for parents dealing with this tragedy, however one local family has learned how important a support group is and has found one in First Candle.org.
First Candle.org is a non profit organization that is dedicated to providing families with assistance and support to keep children healthy from pregnancy to baby’s first birthday. Their goal is to raise community awareness, provide SIDS and SUID (Sudden Unexplained Infant Death) research, and advocate for grieving families who have experienced the unexplained death of a baby. First Candle provides support to approximately 13,000 families annually. It is a four star rated organization on Charity Navigator and First Candle also meets all guidelines as set forth by the Better Business Bureau and is listed in its Wise Giving Guide. It counts the following among it’s partners the:
Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC)
Division of Reproductive Health (CDC)
Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA)
Indian Health Services (IHS)
Maternal & Child Health Bureau (MCHB)
National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC)
National Centers for Birth Defects & Developmental Disabilities (CDC)
National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD)
National SIDS/ID Project IMPACT
National SIDS/Infant Death Resource Center
Unfortunately, one local family found out about First Candle.org the hard way. In May, their 4 month old son and grandson was lost to them. However, they now are finding some comfort in providing support to the organization that is helping their family and many others through the difficult loss of a baby through a memorial ride and fundraiser to benefit this helpful support organization.
