While the South Carolina gubernatorial election is still months away, Democratic contender Vincent Sheheen is already harshly criticizing his Republican opponent, Nikki Haley.
Running on the heels of now governor Mark Sanford who was nearly removed from office after admitting to an affair that may have involved misuse of state travel funds, Haley promotes a platform of transparency, accountability, and responsible fiscal discipline.
Sheheen claims Haley’s limited personal tax disclosure contradicts her publicly stated commitment to transparency. While Sheheen has released 10 years of returns to the media, Haley has only allowed reporters limited access to her recent returns. Sheheen further points out that her failure to pay taxes on time for two years in a row stands in stark contrast to her stated commitment to accountability and responsible fiscal discipline.
Last week, Sheheen went one step further towards substantiating his own transparency and accountability by releasing his legislative emails. His Facebook page states: “Today, I have released my legislative emails and I challenge Representative Haley to do the same. Candidates must practice what we preach. It is about a true and open government.”
