The Shechinah is both a dwelling place and a place where the transfer of the divine infusion from above descends below and likewise the aspiring prayers ascend and then transcend from below to above. In this way the unity of all things is considered . What this means is that the Shechinah is always viewed from the standpoint of being in a state of transition. This transition is similar whether or not it takes place between the levels of Atziluth and Briyah, Atziluth and Atik or operates in the instance of klal Yisrael in freeing them from the state of slavery into the state of freedom.
The Shekinah is the awareness of both the sense of connection and the transcendence that all being passes through in its reawakening to the above. Call it a facilitator or even compare it to the pillar cloud that protected and cared for Yisrael in Bamidbar. It operates the same in the latter case as a palpable essence for connection above.
In Basi Legani the last Chassidic discourse of the Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Shneersohn (The Lubavicher Rebbe) he says this concerning the Shechinah quoting the Rebbe Maharash…
The Rebbe Maharash writes that one of the reasons why the kav is called Shechinah in relation to the Ein Sof-light, is that the kav is drawn down in order to become enclothed in the worlds and in Jewish souls. It is therefore termed Shechinah even at its outset.
Kav is the essence that appears from above (the line piercing via the Tzimtzum) emanating through all four worlds (Atziluth, Briyah, Yetzirah and Assaiah) Think of it as continuously undergoing transformation while retaining the quality of holiness originating above. No matter how diluted it becomes in each subsequent passages through these worlds it always retains its core connection. In this manner what is defined as the Shechinah transforms on the one hand while remaining true to what is above thereby infusing every transformation with the holiness of above.
The hidden source however, always remains immanent throughout all of Creation. It does this so as not to overwhelm Creation with the light of its awesome knowing. In this way the Shechinah provides that connecting link so that the divine presence may be felt and through that innate feeling a sense of the wonder of Hashem may be grasped even in an infinitesimal degree. This in effect allows comprehension in stages each level subservient to the one above cascading all the way through via the Sephiroth through various pathways of interconnection.
Therefore we may come to understand two kinds of emanation. One is the light in extension where a simultaneous perception takes place without regard to limits and the second is light in contraction where the limiting factors are gradually stepped down in order of increasing comprehension applicable to each permeated level of awareness.
In turn to reiterate the Shechinah is there to orient that which is being permeated i.e. Consciousness so that there will always be a point of reference that relates back to Ha Kodesh Barachu. This is a system of unification that is everywhere linked together from its inception through to its revelation via emanation. It therefore reflects that about which it is said…
Bereshis 1:6 And God said: ‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’
What is it that stands between? What is the connecting link forever? It is the Shechinah. B”H.
