Seven ways to put unemployment time to good use

by damp fang

Unemployment isn’t fun for anyone. Well, that is unless you make it fun. Yes, it can be stressful looking for work. However, sandwiched in between job hunting and managing your life, there are some things that Los Angeles (and other) job seekers can do that can either help improve their financial position or give them a leg up on the competition for local jobs.

Steps to help improve your financial position

–Have a yard sale

You read that right. Having a yard or garage sale is a great way to not only unload (excuse me, repurpose) your no-longer-needed items, it can bring you a small chunk of change. Sure it’s only a temporary fix; however, it’s a great way to socialize and earn a little extra income to tide you over while you’re unemployed.

–Try out for a game show

Okay, admit it. You haven’t spent every waking hour during your unemployment looking for work, right? You occasionally catch a glimpse of “The Price is Right” or “Deal or No Deal.” Well, they film both shows right here in Los Angeles, so if you’ve ever considered it before, now is the time to see if you’ve got game.

–Write about your experiences online

While you’re unemployed and looking for the right opportunity, why not write about the things you know and get paid for it?

There are plenty of websites that allow you to write about your favorite topics. And while they may not pay enough to cover the rent (unless you post a lot of articles that are extremely popular), quite a few offer a nice per article and/or monthly amount that can help defray some expenses while you’re unemployed.

Those that you might want to consider, besides Examiner, of course, include Suite 101, Associated Content and Helium, just to name a few.

–Start your own business

If you’re someone who has always thought that having their own business would be ideal, now just might be the time to strike out on your own. In fact, many experts suggest that a down economy is the best time to start a new business. All you need to do is take the time to explore your options and understand how to open a small business in Los Angeles.

Steps to improve your chances of landing a job

–Learn a new skill

Take some of the time while you’re looking for work to improve the skills that you have and improve your chances of landing a new job. The reason this makes sense is that given the choice between two equally qualified candidates, employers will likely choose the one with more skills. If you’re wondering where to start, there are a wide range of community, trade and technical colleges throughout the Los Angeles area. In addition, there are a lot of community-based organizations that offer training services as well.

–Learn a new trade

If you have ever thought about changing careers, doing it while you’re unemployed might be the best move. It can often be difficult to make a career change when you are comfortably employed. However, faced with unemployment and the freedom to do something new, making a career change can be easier to navigate. Just be sure to do your homework.

–Volunteer your time

Volunteering is a great way to keep your skills updated and work history fresh while you’re unemployed. In addition, sometimes volunteering can lead to new career or employment opportunities.

Whatever you decide to do while you’re unemployed—make some extra cash on the side or improve your value as an employee—make sure you spend your time productively.
