Summer days, driftin’ away to oh, oh those summer nights…
For me, a huge part of summer is getting a great glow! But working in the service industry, my weekends are limited: usually my days off occur on the usual Sunday or in the middle of the week while everyone else is at their full-time job. To maintain a decent glow in the healthiest way possible, I’ve been on the search for the perfect airbrush tan. Today’s contestant? Queen Bee Waxing in Culver City. I had heard so many things about Queen Bee that I was starting to wonder why I hadn’t visited already. Known for their waxing, I read about them yet again in Allure magazine, this time for their airbrush tan. Having had been an airbrush tech before, I was eager to see if Queen Bee new their honey.
I called early on Saturday morning, the day before July 4th, to ask a few questions. The receptionist referred me to their website. There, I could easily pick a time to come in and book my appointment. Within minutes I had gotten a response from the manager about coming in for my tan. Not to mention I was excited to see a promotion on their Facebook page for a $30 tan between the 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. window.
Located conveniently on Culver Boulevard, right by Sony Pictures Studios, I pulled into a parking spot located right in front of the salon. You can’t miss it — it’s very easy to find.
I’d have to say the only downside to my experience was entering and exiting the salon. While one of the receptionists was helpful, she wasn’t particularly attentive and I didn’t feel like anyone was too excited to be working/to see me. Another didn’t greet me at all. Granted, I’m not one to be getting excited about, however as a first-time client I figured a little pep would have been included.
As far as my technician, she made up for what was lacking by greeting me with a huge smile and a great attitude. After a quick tour of the salon, she asked me if I had airbrushed before and what color I was going for. She was very efficient and to the point.
The room was smaller than most I’d been to, but it’s conveniently laid out. Fans are attached to the wall for efficient drying; a tile floor (easy to clean), shelves for the necessities. My tech was telling me everything I used to tell my clients, like facts such as, “You will look extra dark tonight, but that is just the bronzer on top of the actual developing tan. You will not look that dark. Don’t rub. If you look dirty, it’s okay, it’s just where bronzer has collected and it will rub off. Pat on baby powder to avoid rubbing on your feet and your hips.” She knew what she was doing, and I appreciated the information – she let me know even though she was aware I was an airbrush tanner before. Needless to say, she was a professional.
Before we started, she applied the barrier cream to my palms, fingernails and toenails. The only change I would have preferred would be to apply the cream to the bottom of my feet and the tops of my hands, seeing as I know my skin and how solution tends to get really orange in those areas of my body.
The actual tan was quick, around 10 minutes I’d say; I didn’t feel like she missed any spots and she was incredibly thorough. After a full application, I was left to stand and dry in front of the hanging fans as well as with a hairdryer. This is a genius idea considering you are cold from the solution, so blow drying with warm air allows you to be comfortable and it helps to eliminate any excess solution that didn’t sink into your skin.
Once I was dry, I applied my clothes and headed back into the lobby where she was waiting to tell me goodbye, before immediately escorting a waiting client. I had time to look around the lobby boutique and pick up a few things, but I would have appreciated some insight to what everything was — I definitely would have bought a lot more had I had some idea as to what I should purchase. Again, checking out was fairly average, but I left with a tan that I felt was sensational.
Two days later
I always judge my tans based on the second day; the first day, you tend to be a little bit darker than normal, and the second day your skin has been cleansed at least twice so you can see the true color you’ve attained. I have to say that I look natural, as if I spent the weekend in the sun. I looked great for the 4th and had many a complement on my tan gams and sun-kissed face. I am looking forward to returning, perhaps next time for a wax or massage!
