The carpet wasn’t red – it was black – and so was the Asprey bracelet and the Emporio Armani mini-dress Angelina Jolie wore to tonight’s star-studded ‘Salt’ premiere. The event took place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, where fans began assembling in the early afternoon hoping to catch a glimpse of Jolie and her equally famous life partner, Brad Pitt.
The fans were not disappointed. Pitt – who has finally shaved the shaggy beard (no doubt for his role in the upcoming ‘Moneyball’ currently filming in Los Angeles) – was by her side, looking equally fashionable in a Tom Ford suit. (You can enjoy all the ‘Salt’ premiere photos in the slideshow at the end of this article.)
Co-star Liev Schreiber and his wife, actress Naomi Watts, also attended the festivities, as did Jolie’s father, actor Jon Voight. “I like the way she takes care of the folks who are here for four hours (waiting),” he offered, referring to the effort his daughter made to interact with the assembled fans, signing autographs and posing for photos.
Directed by Phillip Noyce, the action thriller ‘Salt’ tells the story of CIA agent Evelyn Salt (Jolie) who is forced to go on the run to try to clear her name after being accused of being a KGB sleeper agent plotting to assassinate the President. The movie was filmed in Washington, D.C. and New York, primarily from March to June 2009, but re-shoots were required in December 2009. (You may remember seeing photos of the Brangelina family enjoying New York City during the Christmas holiday season.)
According to an interview with Ric Kidney, an executive producer for the film, Angelina insisted on doing her own stunts for the film (with the exception of a jump between two speeding cars), and she was once taken to the hospital as “a precautionary measure” after suffering a minor head injury on the set.
Not only did this decision risk production delays should Jolie suffer a serious injury, it made both her job and Kidney’s something of a logistical nightmare. Typically with a production such as this, the A-list actor films the movie’s dramatic scenes while an entirely independent crew shoots the action with stunt doubles in a different filming location. Doing both required Jolie to work six or seven-day weeks, traveling back and forth between the two movie locations. Kidney noted:
We had to put Angie on a helicopter back and forth between Washington, D.C., and Albany [N.Y.] quite a bit, but it was worth all of the extra planning because with Angie in the shots, it looks so much more believable. We didn’t have to shoot over someone’s shoulder. We didn’t have to cheat in the editing room.”
After a featured screening at Comic Con in San Diego this Thursday (July 22), ‘Salt’ opens wide on Friday (July 23) in North America and in the U.K. on August 20. 2010.
