If the loss of the Michigan State Fair this year leaves you longing for a fair fix, why not attend the Eastern Michigan Fair this week- August 10-14? The 112 year old Eastern Michigan Fair has clean, safe, family friendly grounds and is packed with fun things for the whole family to do. It’s one of the largest county fairs in Michigan.
There is an expansive midway full of rides and carnival attractions, barns full of 4-H and FFA youth and their animals, a petting zoo, daily circus shows with live elephants and tigers, alligator wrestling, horse shows, merchants building, and daily special events.
Special events include a 10 story drop of a car with a stuntman inside and a tractor pull at 7 pm Tuesday, Aug 10. On Wednesday, Aug 11, at 8 pm Bucky Covington, former American Idol contestant and country singer will perform on the midway and there will be figure eight races at the grandstand. On Thursday Aug.12 you can bid on prize livestock at the 4-H auction in the afternoon or attend the Superman motocross races at 7 pm. On Friday, Aug,. 13 there is auto cross bump and run and on Saturday Aug.14 there is the exciting finale of Demo Derby beginning at 7 pm.
There is a daily bike raffle drawing for kids. One of the featured bikes will be a fully restored 1979 Schwinn Stingray bike. And if you like winning things there is a huge silent auction set up in the Master Gardener building featuring an array of exciting handcrafted garden décor, plants and lots of other interesting things.
In the Master Gardener Building fairgoers can tour a plant maze, plant a garden in a bag and even get a massage. There is a garden photo contest on exhibit. Master Gardeners are on hand to answer garden questions. In the 4-H and open exhibitors buildings you can gaze at prize winning cakes, pies, quilts, art, crafts, canned goods and other exhibits.
If you are hungry for fair food – the midway is crammed with food vendors offering a wide range of delectable foods. One of the new “fairfoods” sweeping the country is a cheeseburger made with a glazed doughnut bun and you can get that at the Lions Den, which also has indoor sit down dining.
The best thing about the Eastern Michigan Fair is its family friendly price. There is ample free parking and the admission price of $15 per person allows unlimited rides and access to all shows and events, including the concert, circus and alligator shows. There is a discount price of $8 for seniors until 5 pm Tuesday – Friday. On Kids day Aug 10, children 12 and younger are admitted for $8 before 5 pm.
