Rick Lazio (GOP candidate for NY governor) called on Andrew Cuomo, the current Attorney General for New York and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, to conduct an investigation into the construction of the Cordoba Mosque near Ground Zero.
On July 07, Rick Lazio appeared at a NYC press conference with relatives of 9/11 victims. Lazio told reporters, “New Yorkers have a right to feel safe and be safe.” “There are serious security questions about the appropriateness of this mosque.”

The Republican gubernatorial candidate sent a letter to Andrew Cuomo; in that letter Rick Lazio highlights several areas of concern that demands the AG’s attention:
• The Imam in charge of the construction refused to acknowledge that Hamas is a terrorist organization. (New York Post, 6/19/10)
• The Imam of the project is a “key figure” of Perdana Global, the single largest funder of the flotilla that tried to break the blockade of Gaza by Israeli defense forces. (New York Post, 6/5/10)
• The questionable background of the funding sources for the construction of the Mosque. (New York Post, 5/25/10)

A day later, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate responded. Andrew Cuomo refused to address Lazio’s concerns by hiding behind the Constitutional protection of religious freedom.
Far too often, apologists for those desiring to harm us and/or embolden our enemies hiding within Islam utilize “religious freedom” as a curtain to shield them from addressing relevant issues of security and safety.
Political correctness and cowardice only serve to advance the efforts of those with nefarious designs. Click here to read about the danger of Political Correctness.
This debate should transcend religion.
Rick Lazio and Andrew Cuomo spar over Cordoba Initiative near Ground Zero
Cuomo took a shot at Lazio by accusing him of religious intolerance. Cuomo said, “If there is a criminal case, then there is a criminal case. But, if this is: ‘I don’t like this religion, and I don’t like this religion on this block.’…What are we about, if not religious freedom?”
Lazio appeared on Good Day New York and said, “Andrew Cuomo should be ashamed of himself. The imam blames the United States for the attacks of 9/11 and now Andrew Cuomo calls into question the motivation of the victims! Andrew Cuomo stating that those who oppose a sympathizer of terrorism are somehow guilty of bigotry is outrageous.”

Most New York City voters oppose mosque near Ground Zero.
Rick Lazio’s challenge letter to Andrew Cuomo over the Cordoba House mosque also referenced the Obama administration’s decision to have a civilian trial, also near Ground Zero, for 9/11 terrorist and mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Lazio has claimed Cuomo is “ducking” that issue as well.
