This past weekend Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar , Santa Monica was hopping on both Saturday and Sunday nights with Rhone Ranger wine tastings. With the Grand opening of Santa Monica Place, one had to wonder if people were strolling in after the mall closed. Parking was certainly a premium those nights but it certainly did not keep the crowd away.
On Saturday Tablas Creek Vineyard’s, Jason Haas poured 4 wines, 2 whites and two reds of the 12 – 15 styles of wine Tablas’ makes each year. .
The first was 2008 Cotes De Tablas Blanc made up of 42% Viognier, 26 % Roussanne, 21% Marsanne and 11% Grenache Blanc. This wine had a sweet fruity aroma and taste.

The second white was a 2008 Esprit De Beaucastel Blanc made up of 65% Roussane, 30% Grenache Blanc and 5% Picpoul Blanc. This wine was dryer and from comments around the room the better of the two whites.
The third wine, a red was 2008 Grenache Cote De Rhone, made up of 42% Grenache, 21% Syrah, 20% Counoise and 17% Mourvedre. This was a lighter very smooth red that can be paired with almost any dish.
The last was 2007 Grenache that was by far the best of the four because it was a rich full-bodied wine. I watched people come back for seconds.
Tablas Creek Vineyards is located near San Simeon. The winery was purchased in 1989 but the first harvest was in 1997. The majority of wines Tablas’ makes are blends.
On Sunday after the Rhone Rangers event at Bergamot Station many of the winemakers and distributors stopped by Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar and poured their wines in an after party. There were 24 Rhone styled wines to choose from. Most from the Paso Robles region.

Some of the favorites were Cass 2009 Roussanne, Justin 2008 Syrah, Chateau Ste Michelle 2007 Borreal, Cass 2006 Petit Syrah, Chateau Ste Michelle Ethos 2007 Reserve Syrah, Anglim 2006 Grenache, and Jada 2007 Jersey Girl Syrah.
Larry Schaffer winemaker at Fess Parker brought his own label, Tercero which features 3 wines, a nicely balance and dry 2007 Grenache Blanc, a dry 2009 Rose and a 2007 Thompson Syrah.
Michael David Winery located in Lodi had probably two of the smoothest reds, one being the 2007 6th Sense Syrah made up of 88% Syrah and 12%. The other was a 2008 Petit Syrah that was also phenomenal.
All in all Stephen Abronson, owner of Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar puts on really nice diversified tastings. Rhone Rangers can be tasted at the wine bar through the month of August.
