When you get caught between whether or not you should remake Arthur, the best that you can do, is not remake it. Recently reported on Imdb.com, a remake of the classic movie Arthur (1981), is in production to be released in (2011). There is a definite pattern of remaking several films from the 80’s, but some of them cannot and should not be remade.
Although the remake is still in the preliminary stages, some of the cast members are listed. Russell Brand is cast as Arthur, and will co-star with Jennifer Garner, Nick Nolte and Greta Gerwig; just to name a few. Oh course, Russell Brand will not have any trouble playing a drunk, but that will not win him a spot in the hearts of Dudley Moore fans.
Speaking of winning, the (1981) version won and was nominated for several awards including: a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Comedy/Musical, Dudley Moore for Best Actor-Comedy/Musical and Oscars for John Gielgud (Mr. Hobson) in Best Actor Supporting Role, Christopher Cross for Best Music/Original Song for Arthur’s Theme (best that you can do). The movie has an excellent storyline with a mix of humor, drama, and romance. It weighs heavily on the talented actors Dudley Moore and John Gielgud and colorful supporting actors that make this movie memorable. The original will be hard to improve or duplicate.
If you have not seen the original Arthur, it is the story of a millionaire, drunk, playboy, who refuses to grow up. His family has arranged for him to marry, Susan (Jill Eikenberry), the socialite daughter of a ruthless business man, Burt (Stephen Elliot). He does not want to marry her because he does not love her, but his family will cut him off from the money if he refuses. Then he falls in love will a waitress/ thief, Linda (Liza Minnelli) and this is where the problems begin. He is faced with the question of if he is willing to give up his trust fund for love.
Arthur: [pointing at a mounted moose on the wall] Where’s the rest of this moose?
Burt Johnson: Arthur, I think it’s time we got to know one another.
Arthur: I do too. That’s why I had to come over today. Hmhmhmhm. This is a tough room.
Arthur: [patting the moose] I don’t have to tell you that.
Arthur: You must have hated this moose.
Burt Johnson: Why don’t you forget the moose for a moment!
Arthur: [looks at the moose; then, to Burt] Right.
Local Reviews: 2 out of 3 people found the movie to have timeless humor.
There is also a sequel Arthur 2: On the Rocks. It is definitely worth watching and it has most of the original cast, but even the sequel cannot compare to the original. The story continues with Arthur and Linda married and in the process of expanding their family. The vengeful Burt Johnson, the father of the jilted bride, Susan, will attempt to come between Arthur and his fortune. The question for Arthur is whether he will be able to get his life back without the help of his family and save his marriage.
Where to find it: The movies are both available at Video One. Arthur is available to check out for free at the Modesto Library and the Salida Library.
