The U. S. Census Bureau reports that mothers are the primary caretakers of 21.8 million children. Single parent households with only the father are 17.4 percent. This means that an overwhelming 82.6 percent of custodial parents are mothers. With child custody controlled mostly by mothers, sometimes it is wise for fathers to seek legal advice or legal joint custody.
In some cases, legal intervention is the answer to child custody. Whether a couple is married or unmarried, the custodial parent is usually the mother after a separation. Often the mother uses custody of the child as leverage. It is more about hurting the father instead of allowing him to be daddy. Who suffers? The child.
Some women allow her resentment towards the failed relationship to dominate how they handle custody. This is unhealthy on many levels. It usually contributes to the “Who I am” in her children, especially for daughters. Girls generally imitate how her mothers treat men in adult relationships. If her mother bashes, caters to, hates, or loves men in her child’s presence, the child is conditioned to do the same.
Most fathers will not seek sole custody of his child away from the mother. The only way this will occur is when the mother has issues that will cause problems. However, some fathers would rather have custody to not deal with the mother. Yet, the majority of fathers elect to keep the peace. He will allow his child’s mother to control visitation until the child is old enough to choose to go or stay with daddy.
