Raw started with one of the best triple threat matches seen in a long time. Randy Orton vs Chris Jericho vs Edge – Triple Threat match – Winner earns a WWE Championship match at Summerslam. For free TV, it was outstanding. Most times, triple threat matches are average. However, this one was just as good as The Rock/Kurt Angle/The Undertaker or Shawn Michaels/Triple H/Chris Benoit. They had three guys that they could just to put on a great match and they did. Randy Orton won the match and hitting two RKO’s on Jericho & Edge, pinning Edge. Orton will now face Sheamus for the WWE Title at SummerSlam XXIII.
Weird outcome to the women’s match between Eve and Maryse. Eve won the match, but the referee failed to see Maryse’s foot on the ropes. Usually, you would expect the referee to not see the babyface’s foot on the ropes. Perhaps they will use this to have a rematch next week. They did use it to continue the issues between Ted DiBiase and John Morrison, as Morrison hit “Starship Pain” on DiBiase after the bout.
Later on, The Miz would interrupt Sheamus’ promo, to tell everyone that he is the future WWE Champion, as he could cash in the Money In The Bank briefcase at any time to face the champion, who is Sheamus at the moment. But the RAW GM ordered Sheamus to face Evan Bourne. Sheamus would defeat Bourne. The Miz would attack Sheamus, and then call for a referee to come out, so that he could cash in the briefcase. However, the match never started as R-Truth made his return to get revenge on The Miz for injuring his arm. So, for now, The Miz holds on to Money In The Bank.
Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov defeated Zack Ryder and William Regal. One has to wonder if Santino & Kozlov will go after The Harts’ Unified Tag Titles.
Wade Barrett’s first post-NXT singles match, was a successful one, defeating Mark Henry, and nearly breaking his back in the process (Barrett slammed Henry, possibly injuring his back).
The Nexus would again strike, all night long. They attacked Edge and Chris Jericho after their triple threat match. They attacked Mark Henry after his match with Barrett. And they would try to attack John Cena, except Cena announced a 7-vs-7 tag match for SummerSlam. The Nexus (Wade Barrett, Darren Young, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Michael Tarver and Skip Sheffield) will face John Cena, Edge, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali, Chris Jericho and Bret Hart at SummerSlam XXIII.
Overall, this was one of the better RAWs in a long time. You can watch the entire show on DVR and not feel the need to fast forward. An excellent setup for SummerSlam.
