Raven Symone has clearly had a knack for comedy since she was a very young girl going head-to-head with a comedy legend in Billy Cosby’s The Cosby Show. Her impressive list of credentials has taken her through films and her very own sitcom on the Disney Channel, but come this weekend she is combining the mediums in a way in an original ABC Family made-for-TV movie, Revenge of the Bridesmaids, in which she portrays one of the titular bridesmaids, Abigal, who sets out to bring the wedding to a crashing halt.
But don’t let that fool you: Abigail is not a character you will love to hate. In fact, it is very clear very early on that this wedding is a disaster and actually needs to be stopped! And Abigail is just the spunky, sassy woman to do such a thing…which is exactly what attracted the young actor to the part in the first place!
“She’s very smart with her quips; she’s the type of person who says things that most people would be afraid to say. She’s real!” Symone shared on a conference call this week. “And that’s who I am when I close my door and I’m no longer quote-unquote Raven Symone. I’m just in my house chillin’…it was fun to play that type of character rather than some bubbly teenager.”
It was also a fun set to be a part of. When speaking with Symone’s co-star, JoAnna Garcia, previously about a favorite scene, she pointed to one in which they were filling little bags with Jordan Almonds as party favors and Symone began sucking on them and then spitting them into the bag. Symone laughed when Examiner brought that up: “We actually had a really good time shooting that scene! One time one landed in her eye, and I was like ‘I love you because you’re taking my nasty little almond.’ It was great!”
There Symone’s comedy instincts kicked in, though that’s not to say a ton of ad-libbing was done on set. “I have to say we had a wonderful director– James Hayman– who let us work out our character quirks beforehand so when we were ready to shoot a lot of the characters were one hundred percent,” Symone shared. “We did have moments where we were able to go for it. There’s a scene in the hallway with the evil mother (played brilliantly by Beth Broderick, Examiner must point out) who I’m about to tackle, and that’s…able to come in the moment because of the people around us.”
When asked what her favorite scene to shoot was, though, Symone pointed at a small one near the tail end of the film when [SPOILER ALERT] the bridesmaids attempt to kidnap the bride and force-feed her tea. It will all make sense when you watch the movie, we promise! “We all bonded even though it was one of the last days,” Symone explained. “It was a hot day, and I was in heels, and the truck was shaking, and I had to use scissors. It was comfortable but not…You just really saw us on our A game in that scene. I had fun working with them on that scene!”
And we will definitely have fun watching it! Revenge of the Bridesmaids airs on ABC Family this Sunday, July 18th at 8pm.
