The biggest star in the entire world of pro wrestling right now is John Cena. The former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion has been the top of the WWE heap for years now, and has been able to translate his stardom into several film projects. In 2006 as he took his spot as WWE’s new Superman he starred in “The Marine”. This popcorn action movie was nothing complicated. A Marine finally home from war, has a lovely lady. Lovely lady is kidnapped by ruthless bank robber. Marine chases, fights, and blows stuff up to get his lady back. Cena as a talented pro wrestler pulled off this role.
Only problem, is The Marine is a pretty dumb film. There is no depth to it. The story and character developement are as shallow as a kiddy pool. There was little suspense or calculation to it. In Cena’s next film, he tries his hand at a more dramatic and engaging action thriller “12 Rounds”.
This movie which is reminiscent of “Die Hard with a Vengance”, with a criminal mastermind forcing John Cena’s Danny Fisher on a wild chase to solve riddles and death traps to save his fiancee. Sounds just like The Marine right?
It does indeed remind you of the Marine, but ‘Rounds’ delivers with a beefier character for Cena and a better story with better supporting roles in the villian, Miles Davis and FBI detective George Aiken. The action sequences are on par with the wild stunts you have seen in “Indiana Jones” movies. Cena on runaway streetcars and firetrucks. Cena in a fist fight in a damaged helicopter. He’s a man of action with little more of a brain in the best action movie he’s made so far.
The negatives are really everything you would expect. It’s an action movie with action movie stereotypes. This not an Oscar worthy drama think piece. It’s a well played tune we’ve heard before : a solid action film that’s well crafted and well played.
Cena’s next film looks to be a completely different turn for him. “Legendary” is a sports drama about a broken family with Cena in a supporting role as an ex-con helping his brother win glory in high school amateur wrestling glory for his damaged family. Danny Glover and Linda Hamilton join Cena in the most serious film to be produced yet by WWE Films. You can see the trailer for the film below. It’s due out in theaters this fall.
