Following are the transcripts of tonight’s post game press conferences from the coaches of the Columbus Crew and Municipal:
Columbus Crew head coach Robert Warzycha
(were you surprised that there was so much work for you, winning 1-0?)
No, we played against a good team. We had some chances, we didn’t capitalize; their goalkeeper played well, but 1-0 is enough to get three points.
(Is Ekpo more effective playing on the left or right side?)
Maybe. Maybe he’s more effective on the right side, but playing on the left side he had some good games also. He scored one beautiful goal today, so maybe we play him on the right.
We knew before the game that Municipal is a good team. Here they had a couple chances at the beginning of the game where they should score, probably, but the game of soccer is you have to score goals. We can say the same thing, we had so many chances in the second half, but we didn’t score. So I think 1-0 is a fair result.
Yeah, he made a good save, exactly. It was huge. You want your goalkeeper to make the first save basically, and he did that. He actually had a very good game today.
(Eddie Gaven injected some life into the game; just having him out there seemed to allow you to do some things.)
Certainly. Eddie is a very good player, it was nice to have him on the field. He works so hard for 90 minutes, I was glad that he came back from that injury so quickly.
I think in the first half they played better, they created more chances. We made some adjustments at halftime and we didn’t allow them to get the ball to Pando Ramirez and Mario Rodriguez in front of our defenders, so they had to go around us, which we actually did a better job in the second half.
(it seemed that you lost some steam and some passion when attacking, are you going to have that back when you play at Guatemala?)
Well, I hope. You have to understand one thing – against Real Salt Lake we did not have five of our starters. We did not have Robbie Rogers, Eddie Gaven, Brian Carroll, Andy Iro, and Gino Padula. So we were without five starters. So we plug players in, hoping everything is going to go okay, but they were playing the first time with each other that game. So sometimes it doesn’t look as good as it is supposed to. Hopefully we’re going to Santos, to Mexico, and hopefully we…it is a very tough place to play, they’re doing very well. They won today 3-2, I think, so it is going to be a good test for us.
Every coach would like his team to be very, very sharp every game.
(Are you hoping to win when you play Santos next week?)
Well, we have to get as many points as we can, whether we are playing home or away. So the next game is against Santos, so we are going to try to get points against them.
Municipal coach Guilherme Farinha
(why did you substitute Pando Ramirez?)
It was the player who asked for the substitution.
(could you talk about your goalkeeper? he made some great saves tonight)
I thought my goalkeeper had a good game tonight, but the goalkeeper for Columbus also had a very good night.
(why did you make the changes from the one you usually use?)
If we could have made it to halftime at 0-0, we would not have made a change.
