Today’s Europa Leage Qualifying matches did not provide much reassurance for those doubting the supremacy of EPL football.
Coming on the heels of Spurs 3-2 defeat in Berne, Liverpool could only beat Turkish side Trabzonspor 1-0 at Anfield. Manchester City traveled to the ethnic Hungarian part of Romania where they secured another 1-0 win away to FC Timisoara.
New signing Mario Balotelli came on after 57 minutes for Gareth Barry as Roberto Mancini sought to break the deadlock. Fifteen minutes later, he was set up by Emmanuel Adebayor and scored the game’s only goal.
Joe Cole was sent off in is first match for Liverpool in that 1-1 draw with Arsenal. In front of the Anfield faithful again, he missed a penalty this time after Lucas Leiva was fouled by Serkan Balci. He missed but may have been redeemed by his role in the setting up of Liverpool’s only goal, scored by Ryan Babel. Cole paced forward out of midfield and found Babel with a perfect pass.
In Vienna, Aston Villa could only draw 1-1 with Rapid Wien though should be favourties when the return leg is played in Birmingham. Barry Bannan scored for Villa and Atdhe Nuhiu equalised for Rapid.
