From July 27 to August 1, Play By Play Theatre Bookstore will be participating in Storefront-In-A-Box at the former Arise! Bookstore at 2441 South Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis, MN. In addition to their regular stock of theatre books and merchandise, Play By Play will hold classes and performances for a week-long event dubbed “Theateropolis,” a celebration of Twin Cities theatre.
Theateropolis will feature sample classes, small performances, readings, and an arts-and-crafts bazaar inspired by the ‘summerstock’ theatre phenomenon. Participating artists will include Cheryl Moore Brinkley, Bill Cooper, Chrissy Fornier, Sonya Berlovitz, Beth Chaplin, Zaraawar Mistry, Ben Krywosz, and Live Action Set. The event will include performances by The Unit Collective, Dreamland Arts, and Open Eye Figure Theatre, and other special events in collaboration with Minnesota Playlist, Springboard for the Arts, and the new Minnesota Theatre Alliance. Various productions of the upcoming Minnesota Fringe Festival will also present a preview of their work, and playwrights and actors will be able to participate in an open-mic night of 10-minute plays.
There will also be an opportunity for Theateropolis attendees to get a glimpse of the process of creating theatre as they sit in on open rehearsals by two Twin Cities theatre companies. On Wednesday, July 28th, Savage Umbrella will be working on their upcoming production, ‘Leaves’, based on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Theater Pro Rata will offer a similar opportunity on Friday, July 30th, as they open one of their first rehearsals of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew to the public.
The focus of Theateropolis is to emphasize the “more than a bookstore” aspect of Play By Play’s programming. The mission of the only theater bookstore in the upper-Midwest is to support the Twin Cities theatre community (including artists, educators, and patrons) with resources and by providing a gathering place for artists and residents alike. Play By Play was originally located in St. Paul until the building it leased was sold earlier this year, but it continues to be a presence in the Twin Cities theatre community. “Play By Play is in the process of signing a lease on a new space, with a September 1st move-in date,” says Kelly Schaub, owner of Play By Play Theater Bookstore.
In the meantime, Play By Play will be able to fulfill its mission July 27 to August 1 as it turns its temporary ‘Storefront-In-A-Box’ into a ‘Theateropolis’.
