Phoenix Combat Academy, or PCA as it’s known by it’s members, is a relatively new and ones of the most active gyms in Chandler, AZ. PCA is owned and operated by Jay Pages and Sunshine Fettkether, and offers some of the most comprehensive training in all of the Phoenix Metro area. Entering PCA, you immediately see the medals, championship belts, and accomplishments of its two owners. On top of all their accomplishments, you also feel a sense of brotherhood, security, and true focus to the martial arts. Members of this gym enjoy coming to train, practice, and acquire as much knowledge as possible from the instructors and the other members.
Jay Pages is the Head Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, and Submission Wrestling (A form of Jiu-Jitsu without the traditional gi) Instructor. He is currently a Black Belt under Arthur Ruff from the Carlson Gracie lineage. Master Pages has backgrounds many different martial arts including various forms of Filipino martial arts, Kung Fu, San Shao, Freestyle Karate (Black Belt), Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, MMA, and Dutch Kickboxing. He started in martial arts at age 4 with his father teaching him various Filipino arts. Master Pages states, “I got involved with martial arts because I wasn’t any good at sports and it was a family tradition. My father and uncles all did it, so it was a natural fit.” Master Pages competed in MMA (once a Lightweight Champion through ISCF), and still currently competes in Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling tournaments. He recently competed at Grappler’s Quest in Las Vegas and won the 168lbs Middleweight Division at the Black Belt Level. His accomplishments don’t stop there, just visit PCA and you’ll see all his medals to find out. Master Pages enjoys teaching and sharing knowledge, and is someone who cares about his students and te arts.
Sunshine Fettkether is the Head Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and Boxing Instructor. Sunshine has been involved with martial arts since she was 12. She started in Tae Kwon Do and became a 1st Dan Black Belt at 17. She began to teach Tae Kwon Do to kids, and then discovered Muay Thai. She began to train Muay Thai in 1995, and her fighting career began. In Muay Thai, Sunshine held numerous titles in the women’s welterweight division through IKF, USKF, and Absolute Women. Not only has Sunshine accomplished so much in Muay Thai, her Boxing background is just as impressive. She held numerous titles in Boxing through IFBA, WIBC, WIBF, and All World. Sunshine is also a Shotokan Karate Black Belt, and also competed in MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Kung Fu. When asked how she got into training, Sunshine states, “It was a natural progression. I had fought all around the world and accomplished all that I could. So teaching was the next step.” If you train with Sunshine, expect 1-on-1 attention for fundementals, then she’ll have you train with partners. All she asks in return is be consistant, take the art seriously, and continue to build skills.
Not only does PCA have accomplished instructors, but they boast a few notable fighters. Tsui-Jen Cunanan is a amatuer female MMA fighter. She holds a 3-1 amatuer record, and is currently on her way to Las Vegas to fight for Tuff N Uff in their Women’s 135lbs Title Tournament. Her fight is on August 6th. Another notable PCA fighter is Josh Pickthall. Pickthall fights in Muay Thai and is currently an AZ State Muay Thai champion. His next fight is on August 21st. If you’d like to see more PCA members in action, they are one of the most active gyms in Arizona. They have other members competing in jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling tournaments, boxing, and muay thai.
Training at PCA with Master Jay and Sunshine can prove invaluable, even if you’ve never trained in any combat sport or martial art. They offer many classes, personal training, kids classes (boxing, kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and combat fit.
