Education means the student has knowledge of the issues affecting their academic progress on the sliding scale of STELLER to NOT SO STELLER and all in between. In the majority of JHS and HS classrooms, the students enter with a wide variety of learning styles, knowledge, interest, and adult luggage as indicated by the following visual. The lecture model for student/teacher interaction is most effective or least ineffective when the students come to the presentation with enough information in receptive memory to allow the presenter to assist the students visualize and therefore place the presented material in middle/long term memory. To the extent the students come to the presentation without any information in receptive memory is to the extent that the presenter will have difficulty meeting the academic goals/progress for that presentation.
Understanding all the classroom academic progress and behavior is dictated by a combination of the following general concepts. The higher the students score in each category the greater the opportunity for academic success. The lower scores must somehow be augmented by the higher scores. As we all have “issues,” the goal is to keep them in perspective and remain focused on our academic progress—not an easy task for functional adults—let alone children.

All children have Family Issues. All adults have family issues. The manner in which the adults resolve the family issues gives a strong indication as to how the student will be affected by those issues. IDEA refers to this concept as “adult luggage” the student carries to school every day.
All children have Personal Issues. To the degree that the students like themselves, at this point in time, is to the degree they will self-resolve and/or work through their personal issues.
Reading Issues-The ability to read is the most important indicator of academic success. To the extent the student can read independently for new information is to the extent success will have the opportunity to knock on their door. The opposite is proven by our prison population.
Academic Level-If the language arts, math, reading, and science foundational vocabulary/concepts can be expressed with automaticity–the sky is the limit. To the extent the vocabulary/concepts can’t be visualized/expressed with automaticity (they have to “think”) is to the extent that education(the process of building pathways in the brain) will not take place.
How do we assist the student reach their academic goals and attain some success in life? We will take up the resolutions in another session! But first, let this perspective “rattle” around in your brain for a while!
