In 2009, Oklahoma Sooners linebacker Travis Lewis recorded 109 tackles, fourth in the Big 12. He also made 9.5 tackles for a loss, recorded one sack and made one interception. What is more impressive is 2009 was considered a down year for Lewis.

ESPN ranks Lewis, a junior linebacker from San Antonio Texas, as the No. 3 player in the Big 12, the highest ranking for the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Sooners have always been known for intimidating, impressive linebackers. From 1980s stars Brian Bosworth and Dante Jones to the 2000 National Champion duo of Rocky Calmus and Terrance Marshall, Oklahoma has never had a shortage of star power at that defensive position.
Travis Lewis is the latest star to step onto the field for the Sooners and he is not shy about tooting his own horn. He started his talking during, of all things, the annual Oklahoma spring game. He promised a shutout and, when all was said and done, his White Team won the game 23-0.
During the press conference, Lewis strode into the press conference dressed in white from head to toe, a big pair of dark sunglasses covering his eyes.
It was all done in fun.
“Coach V (defensive coordinator Brent Venables) loved it,” Lewis told ESPN. “He broke out laughing, he went crazy. Coach [Bob] Stoops was in there, and his face lit up,”
Don’t expect another “Boz,” though. Lewis plans on toning his showboating down when the season starts and letting his talent do the talking for him.
“I might bring out the shades after a win — a big win,” Lewis said. “I’ll definitely bring out the shades and have that swag out there. Definitely if we beat Texas, you will definitely see the glasses.”
Lewis enters the season as the conference’s top returning tackler in 2010. This is after he exceeded those numbers in his freshman year at Oklahoma. In 2008, Lewis recorded 144 tackles, 11.5 for a loss. He also recorded 3.5 sacks and intercepted four passes in his first season.
Travis Lewis expects 2010 to be an even better year as he continues to improve as a player.
“I know what to do and since I’m taking more control of the defense, Lewis said. “I’m able to have more fun out there. I’m able to go out there and get the guys riled up, and having fun playing football. I think it’ll make our team better, when people are having and fun flying around and not thinking about being tired or what to do, just thinking about going out there and getting the next hit — or big hit — it just makes your team better.
“We don’t want to give up anything,” Lewis said. “We want to be the best defense in the Big 12 and the best in all of football, the goal hasn’t changed.”
