Over the weekend, President Obama made remarks at a White House Muslim dinner and said that he believes Muslim’s have a right to practice their religion on private property, and that includes the right to build their mosque near Ground Zero. The comments have brought the controversial debate to light once again, and have outraged the Americans who don’t believe the Mosque should be built so near to Ground Zero.
“Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” said Obama Friday night at the dinner.
On Saturday, the president said, “I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque” near Ground Zero. “I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.”
The comments led many to believe that President Obama was backing away from the comments he made Friday night.
White House spokesman, Bill Burton said Saturday that the president wasn’t backtracking. “The president is not backing off in any way from the comments he made last night,” Burton said.
The project has been described by its designer as an “Islamic community center” and that it “is not a mosque.” The center will “include a 500-seat performing arts center, a lecture hall, an exhibition space, a swimming pool, a gym, a culinary school, a restaurant and a prayer space for Muslims,” according to CNN.
