Yesterday, I reported on a story about some Nikon rumors that were really setting the camera world alight. First, two cameras and four lenses were rumored to be released at any time. As of yesterday, all the supposed products became a reality. So, with a six product rumor coming true, what about more online Nikon gossip?
Rumor 1: D90 replacement
The Nikon D90, the first dSLR with video capability, is 2 years old, which is ancient in the digital age, even for a mid-level SLR model. So, with the new D3100 taking the spot as Nikon’s new entry-level model and greatly upping the ante at the same time, one can be pretty sure that the mid-level D90 replacement will be even better.
So, according to Nikon Rumors, this is what the D90 replacement (don’t ask me what they’ll call it, there was a D100 in 2002) will look like:
16Mp sensor, (maybe, flies in the face of Nikon’s recent, conservative approach to resolution increases)
1080p video, (guarantee, D3100 has this)
6-8 frames per second, (I would go lower, Nikon’s current pro-grade crop cam, the D300s, does 7fps. However, this camera is due for a replacement, too, so 8 for the D90 successor may not be so crazy)
ISO up to 25,600, (that high on an APS-C cam is a gimmick, but a lot of novice buyers don’t know this)
39 autofocus points (seems a bit of a stretch for a cam of this level)
Metal body (would be nice, no word on sealing, though)
Price: $1200 (if this and the above are true [including my addition of a sealed body], I’m jumping to Nikon!)
Rumor 2: new Nikon 200mm f2 lens
Nikon already has one that was released in 2004. In lens terms, 6 years is a short lifespan for a $4,000+ lens, but who knows, Nikon’s engineers may have pulled a rabbit out of the hat to make a new lens worthwhile.
Rumor 3: P7000 point and shoot
10Mp sensor (makes sense, Canon’s pixel reduction made quite a splash)
28-200mm equivalent zoom lens (beats old P6000, competing Canon G11)
Rumor 4: Full frame cameras:
Don’t expect one (seems likely, Nikon’s full framers produce probably the best images for noise (D3s, D700) and fine detail (D3x) on Earth.
