Hernando County budget cuts have taken their toll on funding for Brooksville’s Animal Services department. Politicians focused on saving money, have neglected to make allowances for the lives of hundreds of surrendered and lost pets that end up being euthanized at the county shelter.
Yesterday, I had a meeting with Hernando County Animal Services & Code Enforcement manager Liana Teague, and Animal Services Supervisor, Patrick Pace, to work on a soultion to the problem.
One of our conclusions was that prevention is better than treatment after a problem arises. So a new program has been created to find homes for unwanted animals before they ever get to the shelter where their chances of euthanazia increase dramatically.
The program combines the use of promotion, foster homes and volunteers.
Here is a brief description of how the new Pet Surrender Prevention Program works:
Let?s say you know you will be forced to move in the near future and you can?t take your pet with you. All you have to do is send 3 or 4 pictures and a short history of the animal to the email address at the bottom of this page. Potential adopters dog will be screened for the best new owner.
As soon as a match is made, an appointment will be set up for you to meet with them so they can bring your pet to their new home.
NOTE: More time = better success, so try to provide at least 30 DAYS ADVANCE NOTICE for this option.
Behavior problems are the cause of many pet surrenders. But what if there were a way to give your pet a second chance to stay in your home?
Many behavior problems can be easily corrected. A few tips, a little patience, or a short re-training program may be all it takes for pet surrender prevention. Just use the email address at the bottom of this page to get started.

Another way to prevent euthanasia at high kill shelters is to adopt an unwanted pet. If you are looking for a specific type or breed of animal, click the appropriate link below. Photos and a history on the animal that best suits your needs will be emailed to you. After going through your choices, a Meet & Greet will be scheduled for you.
