A brand new adventure is heading our way through Disney’s Animal Kingdom and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
Those of you that love Kilimanjaro Safari will soon be able to experience the thrill of a trek through the savannah. Sure it sounds similar to the truck ride, but this time you’ll be on a walking excursion.
Yes, that’s correct. You will be able to walk the ways of Little Red through the savannah and see it’s like to live the life of those living in traditional African cities.
A few weeks ago, a teaser announcement was listed on the Disney Parks blog letting us all know just what we could look forward to.
“If you’ve ever wanted to venture off the beaten path and farther into the Kilimanjaro Safaris Expedition savannah, you’ll have a chance later this year. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park will be offering a new, immersive experience that’ll take a small group of Guests on personalized, guided treks along some unexplored areas of the Harambe Reserve. During the excursions, you’ll be able to spend more time observing the wildlife on the savannah and have a chance to learn about the animals and their behaviors from one of our Disney guides. Adventurers will also trek through an undeveloped forest area of the Harambe Reserve and then board a unique vehicle specially designed for the rest of the quest. Walt Disney Imagineers are still working on many of the details but we wanted to share the news with you first.“
Sound fantastic just from that alone doesn’t it? Well now there are some additional details for us all to check out so please read through them and prepare for the time of your lives.
~ The trekking adventure is to be a 3 hour experience, with two guides and a group size of approximately 10-12 guests.
~ It will be operating daily during park hours, with multiple excursions per day.
~ The experience begins in Harambe village, where guests will receive safety equipment and a briefing ahead of the trek. It will be somewhat physically demanding, so there will likely be age/physical requirements and a waiver.
~ The trek will pass through the forests of Kilimanjaro Safaris along unmarked paths on foot. Rope bridges link some of the areas to be explored. New construction on the savannah will provide infrastructure – rope bridges, viewing areas, restrooms, and possibly a zip line. A big emphasis of the experience is touring unexplored areas with a sense of adventure, and there are no plans for any direct interaction with the animals.
~ Approximately half of the experience will be on foot, and the other half will be on a new specially designed vehicle.
~ One of the highlights of the trek will feature a cliff edge viewing of the hippo area requiring the use of safety harnesses.
~ The opening of the experience is planned for December 2010.
Wow…just wow. Reservations will be able to be made later this year so keep an eye here and I’ll pass that news along to you as soon as it’s known.
