Back in May, the retired boxer Mike Tyson emerged, slim and trim, to announce that he had given up all animal products–dairy included–and was feeling great.
The plan seems to be sticking: In an interview for the August issue, Tyson told Details magazine, “It’s been eight months with this vegan stuff, but I get these explosions of energy. I don’t know how long they last, but they’re like explosions. So powerful.”
Iron Mike isn’t the only celebrity who’s embraced vegan eating. Ellen DeGeneres, Joaquin Pheonix, Sandra Oh, Casey Affleck, Demi Moore, and Alyssa Milano all stay away from dairy, eggs, and meat, according to the website vegan-nutritionista.com. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and track star Carl Lewis are among the athletes listed as vegans by the website.
The reasons celebrities cite range from health to ethics. As Ellen DeGeneres writes on her website, “I personally chose to go vegan because I educated myself on factory farming and cruelty to animals, and I suddenly realized that what was on my plate were living things, with feelings.”
