While the Dodgers percolate along in a way that shows no promise of greatness, the owners’ divorce continues to provide a glimpse into the way they spend money on themselves.
There was the psychic who earned hundreds of thousands to think positively. Two McCourt sons earned a bundle for an undefined role with the team while they attended college and grad school.
Both spouses need not just one but multiple super-lawyers for their legal teams, churning fees of up to seven figures a month.
It’s all about the money for the spouses who built an empire and now want to keep as much of it as they can away from the other. Remember the request of up to $1 million a month in support from Mrs. McCourt and Mr. McCourt’s tart suggestion for her?
Frank tells Jamie to see a house to pay for her monthly bills
Then there was the accusation of cheating leveled by Frank. He made Jamie’s choice sound like a gigolo and labeled her as a tart. Jamie’s retort was an accusation of books of accounts being cooked by her estranged husband.
Who can forget Frank saying that Jamie’s team title was nothing but show because she wasn’t bright enough to handle serious business issues. That justified him locking her out of her office after a public firing.

Nothing written or spoken by the McCourts however, makes the meter sizzle like the first few hours after LeBron James spurned Cleveland and the team’s owner Daniel Gilbert.
James, according to Gilbert didn’t have the courtesy to return messages throughout the free agency process. The topper was that LeBron failed to inform the Cavs, even for a few minutes of strained conversation prior to his announcement, that he was leaving them for Miami.
LeBron vs. Dan Gilbert, one spectacular divorce
Dan Gilbert posted an open letter to the Cavs fans on the team’s website that uses words like,”cowardly betrayal”, “shocking lack of disloyalty”and “our homegrown ‘chosen one’.” But that isn’t the worst of it.
In an Associated Press interview after the television broadcast of “The Decision ” Gilbert called James a quitter and named specific playoff games to buttress his point.
The topper however is the intimation by Gilbert that he and the team have kept ugly details to themselves when The King was in their midst. Now that he is supposedly a traitor they have no need to keep secrets any longer and you can bet the inside scoop will come pouring out.
Divorces come in all areas of life, not just in marriage. Business divorces can be just as bad. Splits hurt to the bone and while the decision isn’t forgiven, if the one who leaves can make it as palatable as possible, some solace can be taken.
The McCourts have much to strive for to reach the heights that will be reached by James and Gilbert. Let’s hope they don’t take the team down in flames to do it.
