Hudson Taylor just concluded his collegiate wrestling career at the University of Maryland as a three-time NCAA Division I All-American. However, he will continue to wrestle with issues of justice, especially gay rights, as pointed out in a profile for the website SouthFloridaGayNews.com.
Here’s the opening of the article:
Hudson Taylor — one of the top 197-pound wrestlers in the country — chastises his University of Maryland teammates when they use anti-gay language.
He wrestled with a Human Rights Campaign sticker on his headgear, and donates each month to the organization.
How gay is he? Not at all. He and his girlfriend will be married next year, when she completes law school.
According to the article, Taylor traces his open-mindedness to his parents, which, as he put it, helps him see others in “inclusive ways.”
He also cites the importance of religion in his life. His mom went to a Bible college; his sister attends one now. A relative was an early Christian missionary to China.
The profile goes well beyond the typical stats-and-facts profile of a college athlete to paint a multi-dimensional portrait of a young man who is passionate about equality for all.
As a wrestler, Hudson Taylor is one of the most successful Maryland matmen in recent memory. A three-time NCAA Division I All-American — the first ever for the Terps — the Pennington, NJ native placed fourth in the 197-pound bracket at the 2010 NCAAs in Omaha in March after placing third two other times. At the 2009 NCAAs, Taylor pinned down the Gorriaran Award for scoring the most falls in the shortest amount of time.
Before wrestling at Maryland, Taylor was a three-time national prep champ at the Blair Academy in New Jersey, where he befriended Adam Frey, the Cornell University wrestler who died after a nearly two-year battle with cancer last Christmas at age 23.
To honor his late friend, Taylor is scheduled to wrestle 2010 NCAA 184-pound champ Max Askren — a University of Missouri grad — at the second Adam Frey Classic fundraising event this Saturday at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ.
